One foot in the windows world...
I'm forced into the upgrade at work.
The GUI is absolutely horrible, there's way too much branding involved.
Is there a timeline for when the OOo team will have cracked the docx format?
"Well, it works fine on my end. Your software must be broken..."

actually I like office 2007. I find the gui much more intuitive and productive (ribbon and stuff). I has features that openoffice doesn't. plus some nice font rendering. excel is just fine, same is powerpoint. I'm not by no means a microsoft fan but it's hard for me not to like office 2007
just my 2 cents. keep the change

I like the fonts, but ribbon to me is a disorganized mess. Unfortunately, I can't get it to run in wine, so I;ll have to reinstall Windows to use it.
Novell released a plugin that allows you to view docx and the whole ms 07 formats, but it's only for Novell's edition of OpenOffice & Novell's OpenOffice only works on suse.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't docx supposed to be an open standard? No need to crack it in other words. Still, someone would need to write a filter for it. Novell did, but I think that's for Suse only.
I'd be happy to just get a converter...people insist on mailing me documents in that format no matter how many times I tell them I can't view them. That goes for MS-publisher documents as well.
And if someone implements that stupid ribbon (without making it possible to turn it off) in another Office-suit, I may have to kill them

Be careful with MS Office 2007, it keeps crashing, on my end.
Personally I use Abiword for Windows and Linux.

I don't mind Office 2007 - its tools are more... intuitive (hell, even some of Excel 97's chart tools are more intuitive than OOo 2.2's). Takes ages to get used to, but everything's 'just there'. I like the new Office menu, too.
Groovy yet non-free. :D

That's good, maybe it is Vista, which crashes all the time, especially Explorer.
It is difficult to get attached to MS Office 2007 because:
1. It is expensive
2. Even other Windows machines cannot read the new format.
3. Everywhere I go, I can use OpenOffice or Abiword (I have the portable editions on my flash drive)
I do think the new interface is a good idea, almost everything can be done in two clicks, but it might have been better if an option existed to give you the "classic" view, like Windows does with the start menu and windows.

1. office 2007 student it's pretty convenient at $149
2. save the file in .doc format and it will be read without problem by office 2003 ;)
3. here I must agree with you :D

I am able to read docx format in ubuntu
1.Go to http://download.novell.com/SummaryFree.jsp?buildid=ESrjfdE4U58%7E download odf-converter-1.0.0-5.i586.rpm
2.Open synaptics and search for alien, nautilus-gksu and install
3.Log-out and login again
4.Open a terminal and type in sudo alien -d '/home/wale/odf-converter-1.0.0-5.i586.rpm'
replace wale with your home directory e.g /home/sola/
Then wait for it to generate the debian package and simply close and install it from your home directory
5.Open nautilus and enter this address /usr/lib/ooo-2.0/program and copy file named OdfConverter to /usr/lib/openoffice/program/
Then open /usr/lib/ooo-2.0/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Filter, copy file MOOXFilter_cpp.xcu to
/usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Filter/
Then /usr/lib/ooo-2.0/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Types and copy MOOXTypeDetection.xcu to
/usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Types/ and close and open the open office program
now you can read and write the new doc format

I just got a copy of 2007 a few days ago and really like it. Though I haven't done anything substantial on it as of yet, I think it's very intuitive.

Office 2007 is a nice little pack (I only had the trial) I downloaded it while I had XP still and I liked it but then I had some stuff done and had to take it school and bam I thought I could print my paper their but ends up .docx isnt compatable with office 2003 they make an update after I convinced the teacher to get it and had to download it for him to. Other than that I liked it.... I have not tried the Ill call it Office program for Ubuntu quite yet but ill get around to it some day :)

I've done some nice powerpoint presentations in office 2007, I like the live "preview" effect when you move the mouse over the icons...

I've played around with Office 2007 and it's certainly made a lot of the harder things much easier. I find though that I can get by with Open Office for my basic requirements.
I think that there's a lot to like in 2007 but the cost of the suite either as an upgrade or for the full version is bound to make people think twice unless they get it bundled with a new PC.

MS does offer a backwards compatibility pack you can d/l when prompted when opening MSO2k7 docs w/ MSO2k3...
You know, not for nothing, but MS has to make good products. They absolutely have to make superior products. They've no choice, if word spreads that there is a free 'superior' product to their offering they're done...

I was skeptical about moving over to Office 2007, but I have to admit, I like it. I like the ribbon menu. It's very intuitive. I have it running on Vista Home Premium. Unlike some people here, I've had absolutely no problems with Vista or Office. Not one crash, not one driver issue, zero...nada. Moreover, my inet download speeds have shot through the roof; from 45K/sec to nearly 1.2mb! I have no idea why, but I'm not complaining. Same wireless NIC, just a different OS.

I think kamaboko was refering to vista...I heard it has a redesigned networking architecture (ipv6, tcp windows scalling)

feisty installs with ipv6 and downloading doesn't depend on which version of ip you are using, but it depends on bandwidth and speed of your connection and also how much load your connection is having at given time.
Ipv6 is designed to increase availability of ip addresses. to know more about it. try this:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Linux+IPv6-HOWTO/x378.html
And just to clarify about TCP windows scaling which is not a new concept with Vista, see below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224829
SUMMARY
This article describes the following TCP features in Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003:
• TCP Window Size
• TCP Options Now Supported
• Windows Scaling - RFC 1323
• Timestamp - RFC 1323
• Protection against Wrapped Sequence Numbers (PAWS)
• Selective Acknowledgments (SACKS) - RFC 2018
• TCP Retransmission Behavior and Fast Retransmit
The TCP features can be changed by changing the entries in the registry.

Well, how about you explain the difference in performance? I've got a laptop w/Ubuntu Edgy and a Netgear wireless NIC, and a desktop with Vista and a Linksys USB wireless NIC. Both are in the same location of the house. When the desktop had XP, both the desktop and the laptop got exactly the same download speeds. (Moreover, I've got a Netgear wireless router.) I installed Vista on the desktop and the download speeds simply progressed to amazing. Office 2007 had nothing to do with it, and I never said it did. That comment was a side note to Vista. So...being the computer genius that you are...explain when there's such a discrepancy in download speeds?

First of all, I have never said anywhere I am a computer genius.
Secondly just to clarify, are you downloading from the same source on your laptop and desktop but speed are varying ?As you are behind NAT and your router is behaving as DNS server what ever packages incoming/outgoing depends on your router basically. if your router is sending/receving exactly the same packets to laptop as your desktop at same interval( which is practically not possible on home routers) then perhaps we can compare the speed of downloads under two OS.
OR
How about if you really want to check and compare the downloading speed try setting up Virtualbox under ubuntu and run XP/vista and start downloading simultaneously on both from the same source. That will prove my point.
Little experiments won't kill you!
