I would like to get OpenSUSE but I'm shocked that you need 6 blank CDs for all of the images. Is there anyway where I can only use one disk?

Believe it or not, you do need all the CDs to have a thorough distribution. Suse is renowned for having a robust distribution. My suggestion is to order a DVD from a distritution compilation site. They are pretty cheap and won't work you to death doing the install.

This is just not true, it's my understanding that you can actually have a functioning system with the first 3.

Only CD 1-3 is required for a default GNOME/KDE desktop install (in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and Czech). CD 4-5 provide extra packages.
that is what you need to know
