First, I'm pretty new to Linux and I'm sorry if this is covered somewhere else that I missed.

I put Ubuntu Edgy on an old (but not too old) laptop some time ago just to mess around with and had some problems when I recently tried to upgrade to Feisty. So I did a fresh installation, upgraded to Feisty without incident, and then converted to CE for the first time to check it out. My problem is that the top and bottom panel items appear distorted (to the point that the date and time are completely black). Everything looks fine on mouseover, though, and everything else on the screen looks fine.

Screenshot is attached.

Thanks.

This is probably due to the translucent panel backgrounds used in Ubuntu CE. You can change the settings of the panels by right clicking on them and selecting properties.

I'm having a somewhat similar issue.

The system tray icons for a few programs I use (Amarok and Maxemum TV Guide) don't appear. I cal click on the area they're supposed to be, and they come up, so it looks like the icons are there but invisible.

They seem to work fine on my standard Feisty install, and they don't seem to appear when I manipulate the panel properties (transparent/opaque, solid color, system theme, etc.).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott
