I just installed steam and ran Half life (the original), and I'm getting an average framerate of about 25, maxing out around 35 and often going down to 5 or 8... and this is just in the beginning tram area....
I'm using an ATI 9800PRO and a 2.2ghz ATI processor (runs approx 3.3ghz intel speed) so I shouldn't be having this problem.
Warcraft 3: Frozen throne also seems to run faster in windows...
What could be the problem?

Video drivers installed and all that jive?
ATI drivers are known for making linux life hell, have you tested your card with native games to make sure it's not a wine related problem?
And are you running the wine games in opengl mode? (does your card support opengl?)

Yes, I made sure I was running the correct drivers by even running ENVY, a program that runs and installs the latest ATI drivers.
Yes, I ran Warcraft 3 in openGL and I still got bad framerates.
As for native games, the only game I've tried so far was Doom 3 demo, and I had sound problems with that.

this is very odd... I was running desktop resolution 1024x76something and it ran at around 20 fps, but when I set it to 1600x1200 it ran at 76fps (windows fps)...
It seems that ANY resolution other than the one I was using runs normal speed... how very odd.
