I want to try some KDE based distros which centre themselves on KDE. PCLOS for some reason doesn't work...the live cd won't boot. I would prefer if they had live cds as I do not really want to install them (unless they're really good).

OpenSuse, no live cd but they do KDE excellent.

I think they have a live DVD, but I don't have 5 spare cds or dvd :( Wish I could try it...

Simply mepis has a nice KDE base, it uses ubuntu's repos and i feel it beats out Kubuntu.
Sabayon is another good one, gentoo made simple.

those are two I personally like.

you can also get KDE on ubuntu via the repositories.

PClinuxOS is good, and there's always OpenSUSE and Kubuntu

Looked at the PCLinuxOS live cd (old version) and it worked. It wouldn't work on my main computer because it's ATI and you need a separate ISO for it. Gonna try the new version again. It's supposed to have the ati drivers with it as well, but it produces a few problems for me, so I'll install the proprietary driver (fglrx) after. I really like it so far, with synaptic, great ordering of menus, and a nice default theme. Last time I downloaded it, for some reason it would not boot on any of my computers! Maybe it was a bad download or bad burn (but probably not, because I reburned it a few times).

EDIT: By the way, I'm using Kubuntu Feisty (but the older ones use Ubuntu), but would like to try out something else. I find that Mepis installs things I will probably never use (Klam AV, firewall - forgotten it's name and maybe a few more) and that it has really old software (Dapper repos) and that it has bad driver support (I tried it on my Dell dimension, but it wouldn't even let me use the keyboard!). OpenSUSE looks really nice, I really want to try it, but as I said, no DVD and that is one big download!

Now that I've tried out PCLOS, it seems too "noob friendly". Hate the control centre. Too simplified. Much too many apps installed at the beginning. Missing the howtos, tutorials etc. from Ubuntu. If only Ubuntu were KDE based..but that will never happen :( Does anyone else know of some good KDE centred distros (maybe based off Debian or Ubuntu so I don't have to leave these great forums :D).

Does anyone know of a KDE (Debian or Ubuntu based) lite distro which installs only kde-core or has an option for that? I would like to build it up. Just wondering if one exists. I actually tried Debian (the KDE iso) and it had some problems with the kdesu. But sudo worked. What?! I gave up. Too advanced for me :) I actually installed PCLOS and it's nice, but I find it installed programs I will never need.

EDIT: Yes, I know you can do this with Kubuntu/Ubuntu, but I would just like to see if there is anything different for my tastes.

Another option is you could just download the isos and try them out in a virtual machine rather than burning them. BTW, I think KDE on debian is excellent. If you have problems you with it you should check in #debian-kde on freenode.

Never thought about using a VM. That will save a lot of burning :)

PCLOS came out today (2007). Typically, they have three versions. If you feel your installs are too heavy, use the "mini" version, in the past called "MiniMe" or something along those lines.
