Having MCP in win 2003 server, only thing I like about is Active Directory..apart from that server editions from MS talking about security doesn't comfort me. Ununtu Server is far secure

I installed it tonight.. SLOW.. Very slow. Their deployment style always follow schedules. Launch desktop OS than server OS with similar kernel and server apps.

NT 3.51wkst --> six months later --> 3.51srv
nt4--->8months later--> nt4srv
2000---> six months later---2000srv
xp---> 9months later --> 2003
vista --> 9 months later (BETA) ---> 2008

oh well.

The similar kernel thing... THAT is scary... "The security holes of your desktop, now available for your server too!"

I remember reading an article about the "wonderful new features" in server 2008.

http://www.betanews.com/article/Top_10_New_Features_in_Windows_Server_2008/1180045346

My first reaction was, wow, those things have been available for years on *nix...they're making a *nix server.

My second reaction was, I didn't know that preventing fs-corruption and system-crippling race conditions were new and exciting features. Couldn't desktop users benefit from these as well? This should be the norm.

Isn't longhorn the first name for vista?

yes, but it seems that at MS it's a shortage of ideas

Kinda', the projects follow the same guide. The OS kernel is the same, just the garbage they wrap around it is different. Longhorn referred to the project as a whole... Now, on that note, I realize Warty Warthog or Dapper Drake is kind of odd so after release it reverts to its version number: 6.06, etc. In MS' case, I don't see why they didn't just leave the name 'Longhorn'. Much snazzier than Vista.

I guess its possible to have a really fast server. You can install server core, which eliminates the gui and everything is command line. Supposed to cut down on resources used. something like 200 mb. so more than I use on my gui desktop of Ubuntu!
