View Full Version : Social Forum thrown in our face ... why?

Why is it that the Social Forum is thrown in our face, everywhere I go it's like "Want to have a discussion not related to Linux? Join the Social forum!" in big letters everywhere.
I understand ubuntu-geek would want to advertise it, but putting it everywhere on the Ubuntu forum I think is a bad move.

Is it still there? I haven't seen the ads for that forum in days... unless ubuntu-geek has some magical way of disabling the ads for those of us that have signed up.
Maybe you should try that ;)

It seems to only appear if you are not logged into Ubuntu Forums. I don't know if what you describe is also true (I am unwilling to register at the non-Linux forums just to find out).

It was there for me for a few days, but it's gone now and I didn't sign up. I was a little thrown when I saw it appear, and it did get annoying, especially after a message appeared in my inbox from Ubuntu Geek. I do understand he wanted to promo it, but it just seemed a bit over the top to me.

Now it's bright red and even more in your face ...
Why are you advertising us all the time with this forum? If people want to find a forum to talk about anything non-linux, I'm sure they can find one by them selves or you know, maybe use the Cafe here!

There it is, and when you go through topics it's there like every 5 posts - its so distracting.
Having it that color of red normally makes people look at it, and get there attention as red is normally associated with warning, danger, stop etc. Having that big banner advertising a forum that is no way connected to Ubuntu imo is just wrong, users are here for UBUNTU forums, we have a cafe where we can talk about nothing to do with Linux.

Looks to me like you aren't logged in. Messages like that only show up when you're not logged into your UF account.

Then that's even worse, a bright red banner only for guests, grabbing their attention and driving them to another forum ...

I still think the advertising is trivial. It's not like they are paid pop up ads for cheap automobile insurance or animated gif banners for ******. It's just a silly little static banner letting people know about something they might be interested in. Yes, it's red. Red fits the forum theme. If we made it blue or purple or something it would clash.

There are plenty of other colors that would fit well, and be less distractive , as I said earlier - red normally means Error/Warning/Danger etc, is that what you want your guests to see? A big red banner that grabs there attention, because they would normally think an error or something is about to happen?

Has anyone specifically mentioned thinking this, or are we speaking in hypotheticals? I'm just curious.

well put it this way, have you ever see an error mesage occur on a lovely green background with white text? I sure hope not, as that normally means everything is A-ok. A bright red banner such as the one the Social Form banner is on, would suggest to the user there is an error and it's important that they read it before they continue, which in the case of this banner - should not be.

If the banner color was different, would you be okay with it still being there? (No promises, but it is a possibility.)

If it was a different color, one that was less distracting it should be fine

We might be able to do that. If it happens, it probably won't happen today, though. I know ubuntu-geek is pretty busy with stuff outside the forums at the moment. You are being heard, though, and your concerns are being considered. Thanks for sharing them.

They're green now :)
I never really noticed them, as my browser remembers my login status... I'm always logged in.
