I've read in a couple of places that Java is to be going open source next month. Does that mean it will become compatible with 64 bit? :)

The 64-bit plug-in is fairly recent. You can download from Sun.

For me, it came up as an Automatix2 update. But, Automatix is using Swiftfox, that shouldn't make any difference. Start out by trying
about:plugins
in the location field of Firefox before using Automatix so that Automatix won't install Swiftfox. Try update center at Firefox, then if nothing else, downloading plugin from Sun.

For Dapper, I'm happy running Swiftfox with the Realplayer, the java, and the flash. In Fiesty, I've got Firefox with those other add-ons.

on the Sun website it looks like i need one of the ones marked in the screenshot. But how do i install a bin file?

To install the ".bin" file:

0) GOTO the directory holding the downloaded *.bin file

1) chmod 700 *.bin

2) sudo ./*.bin

So far no problemo ... Of-course I'm stuck here. Still no FFox Java. In addition I'm showing the Java_5 control panel, not the Java_6 control panel. [ usability rant supressed ].

Now what?

Checking out my system settings, I find I still have the following on my AMD 64 X 2 setup :
Sun Java 5.0 Plugin Control Panel (32 bit)
Sun Java 5.0 Policy Tool
Sun Java 5.0 Policy Tool (32 bit)
in addtion to the updated Java 6.0 versions I myself have added. Java, of course, is notorious for not removing older versions when new ones are added ; on my XP boot I have simply removed the earlier versions. Can I - and should I - do the same on my Feisty boot ? Is the best way to do this to uncheck the appropriate boxes in Synaptic, or do I need to do something else instead ? Or, as there is plenty of room on my computer, would it be better simply to keep the Java 5.0 programmes ?...
