Can't read text in WoP and Tremulous games

I installed Feisty on my t43p thinkpad around four weeks ago to gain some experience with linux and it immediately replaced XP for me. Since I have free time now that its summer I've been trying to see what I can do, and tried to install some FPS's. I have a 2 GHz processor, 1 G ram and an ATI x300. I have XGL and Beryl up and running, although I switch to Metacity to run 3d games. I installed World of Padman using the guide linked to in this forum and Tremulous from Add/Remove. Both launch fine and I can read and navigate the menus. However, once I enter a game I can't read any text such as on in game menus or on hud displays. Then I have to alt-ctrl-backspace out of feisty since they are in full screen and I can't find quit. Is this a common problem/anyone have any ideas? I appreciate it!

As an update to this, I'm fairly sure the problem was XGL, and I don't know why I didn't running a non-XGL session. I have since reinstalled feisty and used the open driver and AIGLX and I don't have the problem and WoP and Tremulous run properly.
