Do your run any private servers and were they ever hacked?

A friend of mine has one or two servers at home which he uses as file and email servers and a few years ago he discovered that someone had hacked into one of his servers and used it as storage, he found books in pdf format.

We replaced the books with a txt file containing an email address, but no one every contacted us to claim victory of the security set up.

Have you experienced anything similar?

Been running a file/print server for about two years now at home. It's never been hacked. It has never been opened up to the Internet though either.
