I'll start: Battle for Wesnoth.

I'll continue: I agree :)
Ok, my expanded answer with one-line reviews!...
Battle for Wesnoth - Easily my favourite. Unique, balanced TBS. Very fun single player and multiplayer. Simple rules but deep strategic gameplay. Could easily be a commercial game.
Freeciv - Great Civ clone. AI is a bit predictable but decent. Multiplayer is fun with people I know. Too many modified servers and clients for playing people I don't.
Nethack - Way too much fun for a completely text-based game!
BZFlag - Fun but my attention span is short lived.
Liquid War - Original game with interesting gameplay.
Xconq - Very varied but hasn't been developed in a long time.
XPilot - Couldn't get it to work but it sounds good!
Nexuiz - Fast-paced deathmatch FPS. Runs quite badly on my laptop.
Tremulous - Super-smooth framerate but everyone on it is way too good for me!
FlightGear - Nice flight sim.
Simutrans - Very deep gameplay but it takes such a long time to play! Not open source but they are thinking of open sourcing it.
OpenTTD - Not as in-depth as Simutrans but it has multiplayer. But too easy to make money. Online play is full of exploits (not cheating just using allowed gameplay)
LinCity-NG - Interesting SimCity-like game. The rules were hard to understand.
Bygfoot - Nice simple football manager game. Very good.
C-evo - Another Civ clone focusing on strong AI instead of multiplayer (hotseat only). Less customisable than Freeciv but more focused on strategy.
FreeCol - Didn't play it for very long. Looks great but quite buggy.
Scorched 3D - Fun Worms type game. 3D graphics crash my laptop (at least they did back when I was running Windows) but look great.
TORCS - Racing game with great graphics (by OSS standards). No multiplayer but very varied AI bots to race against.

I was thinking the same thing but there are millions of posts like this before that. This has its place like any other... games are always updated and opinions can change. Also the repetition is good for new users who aren't used to these posts. What we need is a completely original idea like a Ubuntu vs Windows thread or 'When will Windows games come to Linux?' discussion.
re: the thread topic, I don't play many free games but, my vote goes to:
World of Padman <---- I can't get it to work actually but what I CAN see looks incredible
(hangs system during loading... I appear to be the only person with this problem)

Saw that, but it's for Ubuntu/Linux/Windows games. This thread is for purely Ubuntu(games which work on Ubuntu) and free games.

I always enjoy these kinds of thread and as Cisforcojo says, there are new games from time to time and opinions change.
One thing that does bother me though, is that when someone asks for everyones favourite game there are always a few massive lists posted which sort of misses the point. I personally want to know about the best of the best games and not just read another list of available games.

My vote is for Urban Terror at the moment.

OpenTTD - isn't free as it requires Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
Battle for Wesnoth I'll have to go along with. Alot of fun.
I also like puzzle games so I'll put Kiki here.

at the moment I'm going with frets on fire. Its a welcome break from all the free first person shooters.
By the way, Is there an open source FPS that is slightly more tactical? Im looking more in the area of an unreal tournament type game, or a battlefield series clone. There seems to be a lot of the quake 3 based twitch shooters, but I would like something with a little more depth.

I think Tremulous might be a bit more like what you want. You have to build structures and defend your base and play as aliens or humans fighting the other team rather than an insane free-for-all. I can't think of any others.

I don't think there are any "Ubuntu only" games out there. Pretty much all the games in the other thread will run on Ubuntu.

Bygfoot - Nice simple football manager game. Very good.
I agree, it is a decent game. Here is a review of BygFoot -- the free football manager (http://polishlinux.org/apps/football-managers/bygfoot-free-football-manager/) for Linux, if any of you are interested.
It may be not as sophisticated and flashy as commercial managers but it's surely playable and worth trying.

Hi. Instead of going the "Me Too" route with Wesnoth (and I agree, really awesome game!), for variety's sake I vote for Danger From The Deep (http://www.dangerdeep.net/). Granted, the game is along way from being finished, but when it gets to 1.0, I think it'll be amazing. And looking a little bit ahead (or a lot, but hopefully not), I'm eagerly waiting for 0AD (http://wildfiregames.com/0ad/) and FreeOrion (http://www.freeorion.org/index.php/Main_Page) (and I know this thread isn't about games yet to come, but I can't help mentioning them: They'll be fantastic once they're playable, and in the case of freeOrion, once it's easy to install).

Hi,
have you tried Enemy territory: True Combat Elite.
Works very well and it is similar to batllefield 2 (of course not exactly..but close)
Its very good and great fun to play.

I thought that Regnum Online was a pretty good game. Too bad it doesn't work with the open source drivers though. :(
I also like to play Opensource arena when I'm bored.

Must definitely checkout 0AD and Danger from the Deep when they're more mature :D Thanks for posting them up

I play TCE...but sorry, its not really much like battlefield 2 :)
I kinda wish it was though :o
TCE concentrates more on low level, close quarters, police/counter terrorist action which (in OBJ mode) is usually over very quickly.
BF2 is more like warfare, large scale across city maps etc
I wish I could run BF2:PRMOD or Insurgency on linux with my specs :(
Linux needs a good bf2:prmod/insurgency/red orchestra clone imho :D

Why hasn't anyone mentioned PlaneShift (http://www.planeshift.it/)? It might still be in development, but considering that fact it is still an AWESOME MMORPG and runs natively in Linux. I strongly recommend any Linux gamer to check it out!

Regnum Online. Now that is a wicked game lol
There are three main features of Regnum that made my time playing less than enjoyable. Firstly, it claims to be a RPG, but it's definitely more of a hack-and-slash, to the point that even the majority of the quests are telling you to go kill stuff. Secondly, 95% of the players are Spanish, and the 5% of English speakers are mostly either 12 year old script kiddies "OMGROFLMFAO J00 G07Z PWND!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111oneoneone", or n00bs. And finally, the idea of downloading parts of the game only as you get to it? I live in Australia, which has arguably one of the WORST internet connections on the planet, including some Third World countries, and this kind of downloading system makes the game quite ugly to play.

Lexter is a great game. Commandline tetris type game where instead of matching colours together you have to arrange the falling letters into words.

I think that World of Padman is the best game I've seen that runs well on Linux. I'm tempted to say that it's the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time other than Half-Life 2. WoP has great colorful graphics and total originality. It kind of reminds me of the originality of the Toy Commander game for Dreamcast.
