I'm not fan of instant messaging, but I've tried amsn and gaim. Gaim is nowadays pidgin, but that's not available from repositories in Feisty. However it installs nicely from getdeb (http://www.getdeb.net/).

I use Gaim, it does everything I need and it looks neat and tidy. Back on Windows I used Trillian (You might be able to get that to work through wine, I've never tried it) but Gaim does me fine here.

kopete works well, its a little more polised then gaim/pidgin, it reminds me more of trillian. although its a kde app, and will look out of place on gnome.

Have you used Pidgin? It pretty much defines polish. Kopete is more featureful, though.

Pidgin is sweet, but I still don't like their choice to remove protocol icons from the buddy list.
Being connected to 6 different screen names across 5 services makes this an interesting guessing game. :P

My bad, I realized after I posted it, that I didnt mean polished, I meant shiny. Since my IM client has to sit on my desktop all day, I really prize the way it looks. I like the look of kopete over gaim, but thats because I'm a kde user. I have not used pidgin, so I wont comment on it. For my money, kopete does everything that trillian did on windows, so I'm happy.

if you want gaim/pidgin to be "shiny" then you merely need to find a shiny theme.
