I currently have both Beryl and Compiz installed, but Beryl is the only one that actually works.
I installed Beryl a while back, choosing it over compiz because I liked the effects and stuff (Compiz seemed boring).
I've recently tried the Avant Window Navigator and liked it a lot, but it requires either Beryl or Compiz to work and Beryl runs too slow for everyday use.
Because of this, I tried installing Compiz. I followed the instructions at http://compiz.org/Ubuntu_Installation_Guide and it all seemed to install correctly, but if I try to start Compiz (whether it be through System -> Preferences -> GL Desktop, the command line, or any other method) it always freezes/crashes/logs me out.
Usually I can start it successfully (by successfully I mean without it messing up and logging me out) but nothing works right. Windows will become unresponsive, everything will lag, and if I try to do anything other than move windows a little it all comes crashing down.
Luckily it just logs me out each time (I really don't know why, but I remember it happening when I first tried to get Beryl working), but that's still frustrating.
After I post this, I'm going to try starting it again to see if I can actually pinpoint any certain actions or occurrences that seem to mess things up.
Meanwhile, any suggestions?
