Hi all,

I'm running Edgy Eft on an Amd Athlon64 2800+. For browsing I use 32 bit firefox with 32 bit plugins. I just turned on the pc and received a drivecleaner popup and redirect. I tried to install AVG but it's only supported for 32-bit. I'm currently upgrading to Feisty to see if that will fix the problem but I think I'm looking at a reformat.

Any advice on removal or prevention in the future would be very much appreciated

Have you downloaded and installed all the updates for Edgy?

Don't take this the wrong way, but do you believe everything you read on the internet?

Weigh up what I'm about to say as to whether you trust it: I don't think that your hard disc needs cleanup because there's no practical way for FireFox and Ubuntu to allow some web site to see your hard disc contents, analyse it and then tell you it needs fixed. It may be that you have not yet loaded the updates to Edgy and so there are known security holes which this pop-up exploits. Because of the complex nature of computer programs, it is very difficult to ensure that there are no problems with the program, so Ubuntu offer updates to fix these issues. Edgy will have these updates until April 2008.

Ignore pop-up windows that arrive from your web browser, because they are mostly offering you things you don't need or trying to rip you off. Ubuntu uses balloons that appear from the top bar on your computer screen, so most of the pop-up windows are not from safe sources. I suggest answering a default 'no' when offered something you didn't know you wanted.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
Ken.
