Hi, I'm pretty new to linux and ive got a bit of a problem. Feisty runs fine on my laptop, but ive downloaded a PPC live CD of feisty to use on my iMac.

its a G3 indigo 400 with 384mb of RAM. I burnt the iso onto a disk using NTI on my windows laptop at 24x. when trying to load the live CD it gets past the white screen and then brings this error up:

RAMDISK: Ran out of compressed data
invalid compressed format (err=1)
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)

I tried then burning another copy of the image down onto a cd at 12X and that just says read error before it even loads the kernel. What shall i do? I have read that lack of RAM causes the first error but it cant be becuase its got 384MB in it. Any ideas?

Thank You

Tom Carr

In your third sentence you stated you have 34mb of RAM.
In your 8th sentence you stated you have 384mb of RAM.
So, how much RAM do you have?

The only reason I can think of is that your RAM is burnt. Try running memory tests on it (The Ubuntu LiveCD has one on it, if I remember correctly).

Its rather anoying me now. how do i run the memory test on the cd?

I don't know about the PPC liveCD but the i386 one has a menu when booting, with the first option being "Start or Install Ubuntu" and the second or third being something like "Memory Test". Not sure though, it's been a while since I last installed Ubuntu :p

Try the alternate install CD.
