System76 staff: What are your thoughts on the new dell/ubuntu deal?

Are you scared that your business will diminish greatly?

After all, many people who were/are thinking about system76 might buy dell ubuntu PCs even if it's just for "the cause" of open-source.

Are you willing to step up and give new, exciting benefits to your customers to make them think twice before buying a dell?

Note: I am not personally against you, as I do not and will not need a computer for a long time. Plus, I think what you guys are doing is great and I hope you keep doing it.

Dell, to anyone who has ever had the misfortune to deal with them, is synonymous with disinterested customer service and inferior quality products. System76 has built a strong following in its short history by doing the exact opposite. They sell nice stuff and provide shockingly good customer service. If anything I think Dell is worried, seeing companies like System76 poised to chip away at their market share.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see more vendors "getting it" and providing superior open source software, but personally I wouldn't even consider a Dell desktop or laptop.
Just my dos centavos,
HI

ditto.

And to the OP... do you really think a S76 representative is going to post here saying "yeah we're scared of Dell"???? This topic has already been covered in another thread. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=429817

HII guess many people would agree with you, but I have seen tons of replies to the dell/ubuntu threads, saying that they would buy a dell "just for the cause"

To me, that would seem as system76's biggest problem, because people are not buying dells out of quality of product/service, but out of principle.

I personally don't have a problem with that, because buying ubuntu dells may be the door to more widespread adoption of ubuntu/GNU/linux/open source

and I do think system76 is a great company as I've said before, but I think they have to step it up some way to compete.

ditto.

This topic has already been covered in another thread. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=429817No, I don't expect them to actually say that, but maybe to provide some input as to whether they will include more incentives for getting a system76 PC rather than a dell.

And, err, sorry, I did not know about that other thread (I tried searching for "system76 scared", but that thread is called "Dell are you scared" so I guess it didn't quite match up.

i'm not system76 staff, but here are my thoughts on it.

if you want to motivate dell, support their *competitors* who are already doing what you want them to do. it's probably the success of gnu/linux vendors, like system76, that motivated dell to act.

and, most importantly, why would anyone who wants to "support the cause" buy from dell - with their disgusting microsoft/novell partnership - instead of a 100% legit shop like system76?

As for the reason why people would buy from dell, is either a. they don't know/understand/care about the dell/novel/microsoft deal, b. they think that buying ubuntu dells would motivate dell to go through with this project and to not cancel it (and since dell is one of the largest PC manufacturers in the world, these users would think that buying an ubuntu dell would be the greatest weight they could achieve in their fight for the adoption of linux computers for the masses), or c. a combination of a and b
