View Full Version : Naked, female, and hating it in Second Life.

Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it? I downloaded and set up an account with Second Life, ran the client to give it a go, and no matter what I do the avatar always shows up as a buck naked woman. Now, I had previously set it to come up as "the boy next door" so I have no idea why it came up as this in the first place. And it won't let me into the "appearance" settings at all. When I pull down the menu, the appearance line is blacked out, and when I right click and hit "appearance" it doesn't do anything.

I would like to explore more of the environment and game but I'm afraid to leave the entry island in my current condition and lack of clothing. It's kind of like living a bad dream in Second Life and wondering whether or not I need virtual therapy, as I generally prefer clothing, and I am a man, and a father of three. It was rather disturbing to have some guy hitting on my naked female form.

Anybody got any ideas?

That sounds really bizarre. I had no problems at all when I ran it in Edgy (haven't tried it in Feisty)
Wasn't really my kinda thing though. Reminded me of the book Otherworld.

Yeah, I didn't think it was normal. I thought maybe it was my graphics card, an Intel, but I tried it on my wife's computer, and she has an Nvidia like the specs say, and it did the same thing there as well. I emailed a letter to support but they haven't gotten back to me on it.

If you are running a Linux client, be aware that it is alpha software and has plenty of bugs. It's unfortunate that it has to be this one...

You can get a (sometimes pretty long) delay while SL is downloading clothing. Apparently this only affects your client, rather than how the rest of the world sees you.

Having said that, I have to admit your problem sounds slightly different from that.

I suppose you could try reinstalling the client. That wouldn't affect any of your in-game settings.

Yeah, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I installed the client on my wife's computer, and had the same problem running my avatar. Her computer has the Nvidia card that's part of the specs. When we tried to get her an account and avatar everything ran perfectly. What puzzles me is that if it was my graphics card (an intel) on my laptop, why is it still locking me out of any ability to change my appearance on my wife's computer when hers runs it just fine?

I downloaded second life recently and had a wee bit of trouble similar to that.

It was that occasionally it said it hadn't finished loading the clothes and I had to wait but others would see me fine. I would appear as a woman in my normal clothes for a while, and my mate said he saw it as well which is strange because it said that wasn't supposed to happen.

Well, I got it working and I'm not naked and I'm not female. It crashes a LOT and none of the gfx settings seem to work (except windowed). Are you sure you're creating your character correctly when you register? I used an old character and can't remember what you specify when you first register the character.

Actually, that would be alpha.

This is actually a rather common problem. There's an item in the NCI Citizens Plaza area called a 'deruthing' rocket which hopefully solves any graphical glitches. If it happens again, perhaps you could try it. :)

(btw, there are replicated Help Island and Orientation Island areas on the Main Grid that you can access later, so don't worry about missing those places to fix this ;)

I had about the same problem, but then in a male form :D
It's like it didn't remember the length of my hare, what clothing I put on, ...
Sometimes the skin was just plain gray.

When loggin in on another computer, it was (sometimes) fixed...
After a while, it just went away though.

Like said above: it's still alpha, so I guess it's quite normal ;)

Side note: SL is so overrated, I got bored after 15 minutes of walking around... Is there anything you can do in there?

I have tried SL (member now since 3 days) and I have noticed that most "problems" occur on really crowded places. The less crowded places gave me no issue at all.
What I did like is the Ubuntu Linux Pyramid (set up by a Dutch woman). A place set up to promote Ubuntu and Linux.
So should any of you try out SL again, make sure to type in "Ubuntu" in search and teleport to the Ubuntu Linux Pyramid.
Screenshot attached for reference.

BTW: Make sure to get your free Ubuntu T-shirt from the top shelve ;)

It's a server-side bug that happened during account creation. It's unrelated to the Linux viewer. The appearance option was probably greyed out because there were no clothing items in the inventory to be edited. A possible workaround would be to grab a fresh set of clothes from the library->clothing folder and drag it onto the avatar.

In fact the Linux viewer, although officially considered at alpha stage, has proven to be more stable than the Windows viewer many times. Crashes usually happen because of faulty OpenGL implementations. The Linux version of the viewer allows to control the usage of OpenGL extensions by blacklisting each of them separately. That way you can make Second Life run even with video adapters that are officially listed as unsupported. See the viewer startup script for details.

I have just installed version 1.16.0.6 and that works just fine. Maybe time to get a new update ;)

BTW: Make sure to go to the Ubuntu pyramid and pick up a free copy of a laptop. When chatting you'll by typing on a laptop after this instead of just in plain air (see attachment)

This has happened to me before, minus the naked part ( Appeared as a girl even though I was set as a guy) ... and I could not edit my appearance. I went to relog and saw that the severs were just being slow, I recommend leaving orientation island and finding an empty sim and relog a couple of times. This sometimes happens because Orrientation island is one of the most lagged places in SL, keep trying, don't give up, SL rocks when you have clothes.
