Hello!
The title pretty much explains it. I have a GeForce 7300 GS rev a1 (I found that out thanks to lspci, my new best friend) PCI-E video card. I am currently using it in Ubuntu 7.04 (this very computer, in fact), and all is well.
However, when I try to activate the closed drivers, it asks for the restart, and after the loading screen, it dies. Not crashes or anything, but I get completely black output.
Now, a bit of background information: I just recently installed the card, tonight. Prior, I was using onboard video, 6200 or something. The closed drivers worked for that.
Here is the same story, chronologically: Earlier today, I decided to try KDE, and installed it. I didn't like it, so I switched back to gnome. Then I decided that I like beryl, but it was slowing down my comp. So a little while later I horked my vid card (the 7300) from a currently-out-of-commission computer, and plugged it in. Not unsurprisingly, I got an xorg failure and had to do the dpkg-reconfigure thingy. I've done it before.
However, whenever I select "nvidia" instead of "nv" for drivers in the xorg configuration program, I get the black screen. If I boot into safe mode and get the root command line prompt, I can reset it using dpkg-reconfigure and setting the drivers back to nv.
So, my question is this: What is making my screen black? Is there some way of finding out? In case if it is useful, here is my xorg.conf file:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
