I just wanted to pass along a neat story that's still happening to me right now: My family is in Hawaii right now staying in a condo that my parents own (yeah, they hooked us up). Anyhow, my dad is a little freaky about anyone using his computer even though it's always me that fixes all the problems he gets himself into. His XP computer is pretty much locked down so nobody can log into it accept with the permissions of guest which means I can't install the software to take the images of my digital cameras. Right before we left yesterday, I got my Ubuntu CD's in the mail. I decided to take the live CD with me to see how it would work.

I put it in my dad's NetVista IBM machine and it booted up just fine. I plugged in my Cannon SD300 and it sensed it perfectly and brought up thumbnails for me to download. Ok, I tried my generic card reader to read the memory card of the other camera. No sweat. This was getting too easy....

My original plan was to download all images to my ftp site at home nightly leaving plenty of memory to keep taking pictures the next day. I still did that but I also came up with a neat trick of using my new Apple mini as a harddrive to write to as well as a backup (oh yeah, that worked instantly too).

As long as I got this far, why not update my website to show some of the pictures? I used Gimp which is on the live cd as well as NVU which I downloaded and installed to memory with no problems. I downloaded gftp and used that to transfer the files to my ftp site.

In short, everything works great! I never touched my dad's hard drive and have all the functionality I need and then some. Thanks Ubuntu for a kick-butt distribution!
