Well after discussing an idea to contribute to Ubuntu with a friend, we narrowed it down to a language pack that would convert english to ebonics. It's such a stupid idea but I just had to share :lolflag:

I'm not completely serious about this :P

EbOntu :P Not Ebuntu. I guess it can spark some problems legally but it's still not the same :)

sorry, but this whole thread smells of racism and should be closed or rather deleted.

My objective wasn't to be racist. However there isn't anything racist about Ebonics itself. If you consider speaking a certain way without any reference to any race racist, then you might as well support illegal immigration too. :lolflag:

And yes, lets PLEASE not relate to race. My idea was to make a translation package like the one for google (theres a site where it translates all google searches into ebonics. I thought it was cool, and inspired the idea.)

And, really this might not have been a good idea to post. I was hoping to get replies that would help me piece together the project if anyone wanted to create it, not create remarks that one would find racist. Sorry.

Fun fact: When the translation infrastructure was first developed the showcase was a translation to redneck.

You don't need to create a new variant of Ubuntu to get this, just start a new translation and get cracking..

Thanks. Well I guess I need to get all the translations that would be out there and put them together >.<. Still not sure if it's worth my time but always wanted to contribute something to make Ubuntu just a little more special. :)

Not racist at all Ebonics is an American creation, just like jazz and other stuff. We started it but we're Americans, so.....

I know that an Ebonics dictionary exist some where may be a starting point

Well here's one but I don't think it is very good. At least it will help with the simple basics. :guitar:

I would not say this thread is racist, but I would say you are making fun of often poor people who are uneducated. It's not very nice nor is it funny IMO.

If you read the link, it's actually "Elbuntu" (as in Elightenment) and the link's just messed up. Anyway, he said "ebontu" with an o like the o in "ebonics."

I think it'd be funny, like how I have 1337k3y installed on firefox

gnomeuser, didn't Red Hat used to have "Redneck" in the "locale" options on the installer?

They did list it uptill Red Hat Linux 6 or 7 I think, after all they did the code to make translations possible and it was a much beloved joke feature.

Hey I use Ebonics all the time and I just happen to be white. Chill out dude, it would be pretty funny to see ebonized versions of Ubuntu. Me and my friend had an idea for Gangsta Linux a while ago too ;)

Is weed legal in Austria? It does seem like you are smoking something, 90% of my HS spoke Ebonics and the other 10% didn't speak English at all. I also seriously doubt 50Cent and Snoop are poor (won't comment on how educated they are).

Ok well my friend and I have some sources now. Now, how should I make this project (if I actually do it). I'm thinking of a simple language package that can be installed and have settings on how much Ebonic you want your system to be. I don't do well making GUIs. Actually I'm a new programmer who hasn't experimented with GUIs at all.

Does anyone have a source I can use for making a Lang pack? Thanks :D

I would only do this project if you are being serious and doing it for the right reasons (like helping African-Americans who might struggle learning Linux with standard English). And make sure you don't confuse Ebonics with hip-hop slang.

Ok thanks. I really am thinking about doing this. I've always wanted to contribute somehow and I think this would be an easy way to make something. However, finding time to do it is going to get harder as I am getting prepared to move out :(
