Hi there. I'm using prboom and lxdoom. I would like to get some user-made wads to play. Can you, based on your experience, recommend good sites with nice wads? (if they work in ubuntu, that would be great :))

Wads aren't platform specific. You should be able to use any wad that works with doom on either of those. A couple places to look:

http://www.doomwadstation.com/
http://www.doomworld.com/10years/bestwads/
http://www.starfighter.acornarcade.com/mysite/doom.htm
http://www.geniac.net/doom.htm

That should get you started. Just Google 'doom wads' and you'll get a crap load of them.

Hi, thanks for your answer. I'll check them.

I must said I searched google and downloaded a wad but when I executed it, it gave me lot of "textures" errors. That's why I was looking for advice from people who actually used them and know where to find good wads.

Texture errors can occur if you don't have the original Doom resources available. If I remember right (been a while since I actually messed with doom) the installs from LXDoom and PBoom only include the demo levels which is the first 'act' of Doom 1 - there was a Doom 2 made as well as a couple other expansions - might want to see if you can find an old cd of 'Ultimate Doom' on ebay or at some old computer store - couldn't cost more than 10 bucks. If you get the originals you can just replace your primary wads with the full version ones and then you'll have all the main textures available.

There are also a bunch of user made textures available and that might be the hangup your experiencing. I cant remember the exact procedure for installing the textures and what not but as I said before they aren't platform specific. It's just a matter of finding the right things and figuring out where to put them.

If I get a few mins I'll see if I can locate some beginner tutorials .. its been like 10 years since I played Doom seriously and though I even wrote some levels of my own I couldn't tell you without some research how to do it now.

Hey, thanks for the support. I was afraid it had something to do with the lack of the original game. I was a teenager the last time I played it and I have no idea where I left the original copy...
I will check some local stores to see if I can find an old copy.

Thanks again.

Happy to be able to help!

In case you get a hold of some original media I found this little tutorial on making them work under Linux:

Have fun!

Did you install Freedoom? Its a free replacement of most of doom's assets.
