We are very excited to announce the release of Ubuntu CE v3.0 (Feisty).

Thanks to the wonderful results of the Ubuntu Feisty release and the great efforts of the Ubuntu CE Team this is sure to be the best Ubuntu CE yet.

The main change is, of course, that this release is based directly on Ubuntu 7.04 "Feisty Fawn". We have also added a few new features. The most visible addition is the Daily Bible Verse displayed on the desktop. This is accomplished using gDesklets (http://www.gdesklets.org/) and the Bible RSS desklet built specifically for Ubuntu CE. It is very easy to configure it to suit any background or desktop setup. The e-Sword Installer received such a positive response that we decided to add one for another popular Windows Bible program, The Word (http://theword.gr/en/). Firefox also has a new look. The developer of the Bible Fox (http://bodizzlethemes.blogspot.com/) theme has joined the Ubuntu CE Team and has provided a custom version of the Bible Fox (http://bodizzlethemes.blogspot.com/) theme for Ubuntu CE. The Faith Browser (http://faithbrowser.com/) theme is still available for those who prefer it. We have also added the BibleToolbar (http://www2.blogger.com/www.bibletoolbar.net) extension that allows you to easily search the Bible at BibleGateway.com (http://www.biblegateway.com/) from Firefox.

The theme and graphics have all been updated. This includes the addition of translucent backgrounds for the Gnome panels. This gives the desktop a much more polished look. We have also enhanced the theme integration to ensure a consistent Ubuntu CE look and feel. The convert_me script has also been updated to ensure better theme integration.

This release marks the end of developement on Ubuntu CE v1.5.x (Dapper). Previous releases will still be available on our mirrors but will no longer be developed or featued on the Ubuntu CE project site. This decision was made to ensure the continued growth and development of future Ubuntu CE releases.

This is great! I know everyone on the Ubuntu CE team had to hustle to get this released so quickly, but it sure felt like a long time. ;-) I really appreciate CE's features and enhancements and love sharing this with others.

Please keep up the great work and know that you are a true blessing to many of us.

God bless,

Chris

Jereme & Ubuntu CE team,

I just finished running the conversion script, as I had the default 7.04 Feisty installed already. The conversion went beautifully!!

Thanks for all your continued efforts on this project! They are truly appreciated!

Absolutely brilliant! :)

Had fiesty installed to reolve my wifi problems, ran your script and all is 100% on my laptop (AMD Turion 64 HP nx8125)

I am delighted to use this 32 bit option on my new laptop (60th birthday present from my youngest daughter :)

Fiesty on main server as really needs 64 bit performance for my network.

Again congratulations and God bless

If you already have 2.2 (6.10) installed do you use "update manager" to upgrade or the christian installer in the system admin menu?

Hi bcmiller,

Neither the Update Manager nor the Christian Installer will get you the results you are looking for...you will want to either do an upgrade (there have been mixed results with upgrades) or a fresh install (recommended, make sure you back up anything you want to keep) to Feisty 7.04, then run the Convert_Me script from here (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/2006/07/download.html). Or you could do a fresh install of the Ubuntu Christian Edition v3.0 (Feisty 7.04) from here (http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/2006/07/download.html), as well.

Hope that helps, :)

Excellent work! I like my new e-sword!

by the way, is there a way to use the previous "start" button? The new button looks nice but my screen is 1280x1024 so the new image looks kind of "complex" for a small sized button (the fish in the middle looks more like an eye surrounded by a big letter C).

Thanks again in putting together this great desktop! (it almost makes me want to switch from PCLOS permanently).

Hi there !
Is this edition suited to Messianic Jews such as myself ?
Is there anything that's going to detract our belief in Yeshua Ha Mashiach ?

It's only because I have seen some funny ideas of how people perceive messianic jews.

From Ubuntu CE's FAQ:

Q: Is Ubuntu Christian Edition designed for Protestants or Catholics?

A: Both! Ubuntu Christian Edition will always try to cater to the needs of all Christians. Ubuntu CE is also a great choice for anyone wanting a family friendly operating system complete with web content filtering.

So it's not just for those who believe in Jesus as their savior, but also a great OS that the whole family can safely use without worrying about offensive and intrusive pop-ups (not to mention it has many scripture study tools).

It helps, thanks Randy, but its a pain isnt it? Could you expand on your dark comment that (there have been mixed results with upgrades)I can't be the only one who has recently (and very happily - thanks CE folk :) ) downloaded and installed UbuntuCE, and made quite a few customizations to their setup, only to find we are now advised to start again from scratch.

Vanilla Ubuntu makes this version upgrade process very easy, so I am being seriously put off recommending UbuntuCE to others. Wish I'd just gone with vanilla Ubuntu, then installed the extra CE add-on applications.

Sorry I don't have the technical insight to suggest a way around this, but its just the $0.02 of a CE newbie.

best wishes

I'm another relatively new CE & Linux user trying to upgrade -- I started out with Edgy. The Ubuntu upgrade didn't work, even after installing ubuntu-desktop. (Failed on three clamav* packages and the update-manager). Won't a fresh install wipe everything off my HD, like the digital photos and all that?

I've heard there's a way to partition a Linux disk so that re-installing will only overwrite the OS stuff. Can someone point me to an explanation of that? Or perhaps I should go with the long-term version when I do this fresh install?

Thanks for any help you folks might give, and thanks for this CE. I've got 2 kids who are starting to like playing the occasional game on the web, and I want to do all I can to protect them from all the garbage that's out there, and CE seems to be a big help in that area.

I just ran the conversion script and it worked great. It feels good to be home after a week of plain vanilla Feisty. The usability of the new GUI for Dansguardian is fantastic. Keep up the Good work.

I just ran the conversion script. I had already tweaked, installed restricted drivers, etc... The conversion worked fine :).

I will say that I'm wondering how useful the top bar really is now in comparison to the task bar below. It just seems barren and wasteful now.

It helps since it answers the question but it's not the answer I was hoping to hear.

It forces me to either perform a risky upgrade using default Ubuntu (this doesn't get me CE 3.0), keep using the Edgy version or try a clean install every 6 months if I want to run the latest and greatest. I am trying to learn scripting so in the GNU spirit I'll see if I can figure out how to mod the convert_me to convert 2.2 to 3.0. Since I'm gonna have to do a clean install to get 3.0 there is no harm I guess.

I'd say this is a major drawback to using this version of Ubuntu. Nothing wrong with Edgy but it's not a new and shiny as Fiesty!

If you are having trouble doing a dist-upgrade from Edgy to Feisty then that is an Ubuntu thing and is not specific to Ubuntu CE. Ubuntu CE utilizes the same system for upgrading the system as the default Ubuntu. The convert_me script basically just installs and configures specific software and makes some graphical changes.

I do agree that this process needs to be simplified. I am always working to make it better.

Hi stevet-I,

I don't want you to be "put off recommending UbuntuCE to others", as I believe this is a great distro. In fact I am fairly new to Ubuntu/Linux (6 months usage). The only reason that I even became interested in Ubuntu/Linux was due to Ubuntu CE. I am and have recommended it to several people, and continue to do so because I believe in its concept and usefullness. I have been a Windows user in the corporate environment, for far too long and welcome this distro with open arms. :)

I guess I should clarify what I meant by "upgrade". When I was referring to upgrading, it was from vanilla Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.04; not a CE upgrade. If you had an uneventful upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04, then all one would need to do is use the convert_me script for CE. I was not suggesting that someone would need to start from scratch after already doing a successful upgrade.

When I suggested that the preferred method of moving from 6.10 to 7.04 was by a fresh install, that was not an uncommon statement (even for Windows upgrades). The reasoning behind doing a fresh install vs. an upgrade, is that any possible inconsistencies or incompatibilities will be avoided.

My suggestion was to help avoid possible problems for those of us performing the switch or upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04. I have seen on the forums discussion of people having issues with "upgrades", rather than a fresh install. Maybe this is improving with Feisty. I didn't take that chance. The conversion to CE is irrelevant, as it only installs CE related software and configures some graphics after the fact.

When you mentioned that you wished you had gone with the vanilla Ubuntu and just installed the CE components, that is exactly what the conversion script does for you; so you don't have to hunt down the individual programs and do all that configuring. It is done for you:)

I hope you continue to support Ubuntu CE and that everything went well with your install/conversion.

God Bless,
Randy

Thanks, Randy, for your detailed and gentle response. I'm now running Ubuntu CE 3.0.
Here's how, in case anyone else is in the same boat.\\:D/

<My boat> relatively new user of ubuntu and the Christian Edition, but with an up to date version of CE 2.2 running happily. Want to upgrade to CE 3.0. Definitely don't want to install from scratch. Graphical upgrade tool won't let me 'upgrade to 7.04' of Ubuntu</My boat>

I had been trying to run the 'upgrade to 7.04' from the graphical upgrade tool, but that eventually told me it couldnt upgrade because it couldn't find ubuntu-desktop or similar. I assumed that was because I was running CE not vanilla edgy ubuntu.

So i ran sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop which took a while but seemed to work basically
Also, I had to edit the repo configuration file with something like sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list and commented out all the lines with 'backport' in them, and a couple of other repo's which i'd added in myself.

Once I'd made those changes, I could run a graphical upgrade to Ubuntu 7.04, which took ages, and threw some minor wobblies, but basically worked.
Then I ran the CE convert_me script.

I lost my desktop settings, my firefox customizations, and a few other niggly things :-({|= , but basically I'm happy:) .

St. Jereme says says in passing...if you are having trouble doing a dist-upgrade from Edgy to Feisty.... I wonder if this implies that I should have used apt-get dist-upgrade and all would have been well? ..and all manner of things shall be well...

I suppose, as someone else has already said, it would be good to see explicit instructions on CEs site for how to upgrade from the most recent version of CE to the current one, at least. Maybe its obvious to you guru's, but it wasn't to me.

There's probably a sermon in here somewhere about the nature of conversion: one-time event fixed in time, response to an altar-call every 6 months or so, or a continuous process of renewal and improvement?

I'm only kidding ;-)

keep up the Good Work

Your situation is not uncommon for any Ubuntu user. I have been using Ubuntu since its first release. I have seen it really grow into a great distro and that is why I chose it for creating a Christian Distro.

The one thing that I have always had trouble with is going from one major release to the next. The ubuntu-desktop meta-package commonly gets removed and needs to be put back to do the dist-upgrade. I am not sure if running it from the terminal would have worked better or not.

I do agree that I need to address this issue with converting to and upgrading to the latest Ubuntu CE release. My project has grown extremely fast. Much faster than I expected. I am constantly working to make Ubuntu CE better and better. Your suggestions will not fall on deaf ears. I take note of most every suggestion and try my best to implement them when feasible.

I used the vanilla upgrade to get to version 7.04 and it seems to be working fine and it looks like it's still CE 2.2.

I am not using a clean install of 7.04 per your readme warning. Is it safe to use convert_me to get to CE 3.0? Has anyone tried this yet?

I am a little nervous since the upgrade didn't change any of my customizations like the poster above me... I still have my firefox settings and my wallpaper just like before. I tried to run Automatix just to verify I was using feisty and I am.

Yes, if you are now using Feisty then you should run the new convert_me script to get all of the updates for Ubuntu CE 3.0. Keep in mind that you will lose some of your current settings. These include dansguardian filter settings, firefox (including bookmarks), and desktop. You should back these if you are concerned.

Just let me know if you have any questions,

Thank you for your help.

I have UbuntuCE 3.0 working on my feisty install. The only problem I have is that the laptop's hibernate and suspend are not working.

I found the thread that explained how to make the options available and that worked but now when I suspend and open the laptop back up it shows an odd striped screen with a white square where the mouse arrow should be.

Thanks for Ubuntu CE. I think its a great project. I did have problems using the convert script for feisty. I had a relatively fresh install of feisty when I used the upgrade script and it said it completed successfully, but after I restarted it gave me errors that something tried to modify my gnome-panel. My panels didn't come back up after that. It wasn't a big deal to me because my laptop is more of my play machine anyway, so I did a fresh reinstall of kubuntu. I just wanted to give some feedback in case this is a known issue.

Thanks
