Have any of you guys heard of a FREE multiplayer game called Soldat? It's a mix of Counter-Strike, Quake, Worms, and Liero but in 2D format. The best thing is, you don't need a modern computer to play it. I absolutely love this game and I think that it's the best and MOST ADDICTING 2D multiplayer game on the planet!

I just checked Soldat's website (http://www.soldat.pl/main.php) and version 1.4 was just released a few days ago and the new system requirements for it now states that it runs in Linux with Wine. Hurray!!! =D> Just make sure that you install the newest version of Wine for it to work properly.

Yes, I already heard a lot of good about it, but I haven't tried it yet.

Ever heard of a FREE multiplayer game called Soldat?
Well, it ain't free as in freedom. Nor is it open-source. :(

But that doesn't mean we shouldn't play it. ^^

Yes, unfortunately you need the latest version of Wine to play this game.

Check out the new system requirements for Soldat in their website's download page which now supports Linux using Wine:

I keep getting an exception error...

I'm using wine 0.9.33 which is the latest in my repos. Is that up to date enough?

Love the style Nythacker BTW! :)

MonkeyBoy, Wine 0.9.36 is the current latest version of Wine. To obtain an up-to-date version of Wine, follow the simple instructions from Wine HQ's website below:

http://www.winehq.com/site/download-deb

After that, you can either use the Synaptic Package Manager or Ubuntu's Update Manager or apt-get to install the latest releases of Wine as soon as it comes out.

Hope this helps...

Duncan_Idaho,

What version of Wine are you using? Make sure that you install the very latest version of Wine (v0.9.36) from www.winehq.com (http://www.winehq.com/site/download-deb).

Also, you might find your answer in this post...

I know this is an old thread but I have a little problem with soldat. I'm running the latest Wine according to the package downloaders, and I'm running soldat 1.42.

I have an ATI 9000 IGP, and under windows same PC it was running fine, which suggests that either driver support or wine is the main culprit.

Anyways my problem is that the text in game at the bottom left hand corner of the screen is flashing non stop upside down (will get a screenshot if necessary) another thing i have noted is that the game seems really choppy and running in full screen mode seems impossible without causing an access violation error.

If anyone can help that would be great.

Do you have any sort of compositing effects enabled such as desktop effects or compiz? Try disabling to see if flickering goes away.

hi, thanks for the quick reply, well i did some reading but i found that the text is an on going issue with the game and that cannot be fixed.

I have however come across other problems:

FPS of 6.1
Cannot play due to Wine and Battle Eye incompatibility
Res of 1024x768 doesn't work, nor does 800x600 for that matter kills the FPS

In any case it seems that soldat and wine 1.10 do not like each other. I think i may just forget about the game and look for an alternative.

I have open arena working fine on the PC as well as Wolfenstein but I dont like these games. I cannot find a simple 2d shoot em up unfortunately.

Ah well the search continues.
