Automatix has been ddosed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial_of_service) three times in three days. The person involved in this wants to disrupt AX and its users.

We at Automatix just want to say we are not disconnected from Ubuntu. Automatix has approximately two million users. Most of these folks are Ubuntu users and they are all being affected because of someones bad intentions.

Automatix and Ubuntu are trying to build bridges. This person is bent on standing in the way of that happening. We do not know the identity of the person yet, but when we do the appropriate authorities will be contacted and this individual will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

We want to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused any of you. We are working on resolving the issue in such a way that will make these attacks harder to carry out.

Sincerely
The Automatix Team.

Go get 'em!! It's just a shame the people out there with no constructive way to use their time. :(

It takes quite a bit to make a DoS attack on a server. Quite a bit of machine power and desire, at least. Is this something that could be temporarily overcome by increasing your bandwidth allocation?

It will take both hardware upgrades and a increase in our bandwidth allocation. We are going to give Techalign a full report tomorrow and see what happens from there.

Unfortunately, some people think stuff like this is amusing. Hopefully you guys are able to find out who they are and throw the book at 'em.

I have a special word reserved for such folk: MEGABASTARDS.

Seriously, what lifeless moron would attempt to bring down a site devoted to making Linux easy? I just don't understand the motivation

Probably because, let's face it, outside our Linux bubble a lot of people use Windows and Mac? Could be a possibility. Not trying to be mean, but hey, most people look at Linux like a hobby, and I'm pretty sure the kid is sitting there, DDoSing, and going "kekekekekeke ^_^"

EDIT: May as well be constructive with the topic...

Yup. Get the little punk, make it stop. Even though I don't use Automatix, I've used it before, a very good service at least. And there are a lot of others I know who use it as well.

Do not let these vandals beat you.
Thanks for giving a great service to the linux community, particularly our new users .

After a few months away from Ubuntu, I chose to put Xubuntu back on my old laptop.
Which was far from straight forward and involved using the Alternate CD.
.
Imagine the horror of finding your excellent service unavailable, I'm very angry at whoever is blocking it.
.
If Ubuntu wasn't so commited to the "free" software ethic, and included all the necessary bits and bobs to make it work, this [expletive deleted] idiot would have to find a new hobby.
.
Hopefully when the perpetrator is found he can be given some psychological treatment for his personality disorder,
Electro Convulsive Therapy.....preferably with a big cattle prod up his backside.

Not new to linux, but relative newcomer to ubuntu...what bits are missing?

This gets me

Automatix is a great program especially for newcomers to Linux. Can't believe someone (or a group of people) would try and stop others from using it.

Hopefully you'll catch them soon!

shutting a site down really only makes a martyr of it. If someone wants to get something done (or block something from getting done for that matter) they are best off being diplomatic, far more can be accomplished making a good arguement. IMHO

Media codecs and some proprietary drivers, mostly. Also some proprietary applications like Opera and Google Earth. It's also a good way to showcase some free apps that might be otherwise unknown (I learnt of Gambas through Automatix, for example).

I no longer use Automatix, but I sincerely hope the idiot doing that gets what s/he deserves.

Isn't this the second time something like this has happened? I vaguely remember some issues with the Automatix server some months ago?

I hope I am wrong, but perhaps some script kiddies are being paid by someone to keep doing this? (Yes call me paranoid). Competition perhaps, Bill Gates sitting somewhere going "kekekeke" as well?

It's a shame that people resort to these kind of tactics to try to get rid of projects. There are better ways that don't build unnecessary publicity and sympathy for said project.
