software patents

i guess i'm a little naive about the subject, but i've been just surfing around, and came across on both the http://xinehq.de/ and http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ , and noticed these software patent scares. What i'm concerned about is how this would affect them, how it affects programmers all over the world, and if it affects people here in the US as far as what programs we're allowed to use or whatever.

Also if you are European write to your MEP with your concerns and ask them to vote against software patents.
