are you serious? It's one of the most moronic questions I've ever heard.

Gnome is there because it's different than KDE. KDE can't be itself and something else at the time, so Gnome fills that gap (or KDE fills the gap of Gnome; whatever). KDE looks, feels, and acts differently from Gnome. They have different attitudes and different target audiences.

A more important question is, how can anyone rationalize this question as being valid?

It's perfectly valid, There is no reason for there to be 2 of the same projects. KDE can emulate Gnome; there's really is no reason for gnome.
