The Unanswered Posts team (finally) had our first meeting today, and somehow we got onto the topic of a default for subscribing to topics. Instead of having Instant Email Notification on by default for new accounts as was originally suggested, we thought that if the Thread Subscription box was moved above the Submit button it would be noticed more.
The reasoning behind this is that if a user can subscribe to their post, they are less likely to create a duplicate topic because they will be notified upon response. However, many users will not go looking for a subscription option on the page, and will instead just continue onto posting.
This is not something critical, but it is something that would be nice to have in the next forum update, whenever that may be.
Attached is an image of how this might look (highlighted in green), and could be as easy as moving a line in the theme file.
