Diablo II LOD won't install...

I tried a few days ago installing D2 in wine, and I encountered a problem I couldn't figure out. I got the full version of the game to install (full installation option selected) without any problems at all. However, upon trying to install the LOD expansion, the initial screen said that I must have the full version of Diablo installed first.

I tried loading the original version after installation finished (and before installing the expansion) to make sure it booted, which it did. Any thoughts to the problem?

I've had the same problem. Did you try to install the expansion and then cancel it at some point? Even at the main "upgrade d2 to expansion" setup screen? I had the exact same error. Ended up removing .wine from my home dir, and reinstalling D2, then immediately installed the exp. I know it sounds like an odd bug, but it sounds just like what happened to me.

That is really strange, because I don't recall cancelling out of anything, but seeing as it was around 3:30 am, it might have been an SOS moment. (sleep overdue stupidity) :)

I'll try your method and reinstall everything from scratch again and hopefully have better luck. Thanks for the tip, I'll post back how it works out!

How exactly do I remove .wine? what does that mean?
