Here is a fun game: say something nice about other Linux communities!!! Since we are all trying to push in the same direction, it would be nice to reflect on who our allies are! I'll go first. This is mostly based on time in their forums.

Gentoo Users -there forum is the best for raw info, and the users are willing to go with you from bootstrap to first boot! Most of them take the Gentoo jokes with good humor, and many Gentoo users have other important projects that they work on. emerge super_nerds!!! I sometimes wish I was one...

Slackware Users -Honestly slackware users amaze me. All of the compiling tar files seems like a nightmare to me, but to many of them its the best part! If I'm ever hiring for an admin job and I get the answer "slackware" to the question "what is your favorite OS", I will probably hire them.

Libranet Users- Before Ubuntu I mostly used Libranet, so I know that they are a tightly knit group that is very nice. Hopefully this distro will have a good future, just so its community can survive.

Mepis Users- We are a pretty sugar coated group around here, but no bunch is more bubblegun that the Mepis community. I don't think that a true Mepis user (at heart) CAN say anything really negative. Its like the niceness is a part of them. I hope that when our OS installs from a Live CD we can be in the same place!

Fedora Users-Very knowledgable, and very quick to chime in with some experiance in "the real world." Our Gnome brothers, the Fedora folks are closest to Ubuntu so I hope one day our two projects would collaborate more. And who doesn't like a picture of a Fedora on everything!!!

Well....thats all I know. Its your turn. Say something nice about the communities in Linux, not the distro.

Please note that if I see any distro-or even worse, user- bashing I will delete your entire post. If its in good humor then its ok, but if you want to rag on a certain group please do it somewhere else; make another thread in their forum or tell your dog or something. I want to read new things about Linux communities I've never encountered, not deal with some worn out stereotypes.

My other favorite communities along with the Ubuntu one would have to be:

1)http://justlinux.com/

As the name suggests, they like to stick to the point; keep on topic. The mods are strict, but all have a huge heart. Some of the people you will find there are incredibly knowledgeable - there's always someone who seems to know the solution to the toughest problems. Those guys are great, they tought me most of what I know. I bet a lot of members here at Ubuntu know the site and can relate

2)http://www.minislackforum.mot-studios.com/forum/

MiniSlack is a fairly new distro; just like it says, its a stripped down Slackware-current. Extremely user-friendly though. I want to list them too because the developers are incredibly helpful. The main guys behind it are always on the forum and willing to help with any user-issues. Oh yeah, sometimes you can even catch them on their IRC-channel (Worldnet). They make custom packages for the distro, which I have to add is super slick. (uses XFCE by default)
For anybody who ever found Slackware difficult, I highly recommend it!!!!!!!!

when I was a fedora user www.fedoraforum.org was one of the places where I got most of my help and for that I'm thankfull.

also www.startux.org [Portugal] helps in any question about any thing related to free software from networks to distros. they are very universal and major distros have their one sections.

While searching for a new OS, i googled "ubuntu or mepis". Both communities said their respective OS was the best, but had pretty good things to say about the other. Totally unhelpful. ;-) I had such a hard time choosing!

I'm going away next weekend, i'll set my comp to download mepis too.

I may be biased (see below), but my vote goes to: forums.devshed.com (http://forums.devshed.com). It's a fantastic community of web developers, php/perl/python/c++ programmers, html/css ninjas, a whole group of windows users (&.net, vb, etc), a massive collection of hardware gurus etc and >99% of them are extremely helpful.

I joined up about two years ago, and got so much help and learnt so much, that I stuck around to try and help others myself. A few months ago, with almost 4,000 posts under my belt, I got made a mod :)

The Kanotix Forums (http://forum.kanotix.net/) - scroll down for English (I have Kanotix on my newer box, ubu's on the other)

It's really nice that Kano himself takes time to answer personally to anything - no matter how small. Here's one where someone asks where he got the piranha (http://forum.kanotix.net/viewtopic.php?t=8423) for the logo.

I mean that's pretty trivial! yet there he is, with a 7000+ post count, polite as always (in his very direct Teutonic fashion). It's impressive how often you'll find him answering questions or taking requests; a very personal touch to know the man upstairs is always in contact with all users, great and small.

Overall eine gute Kommu.... oops sorry! :-P a good community with the ever omniscient Kano always there in a pinch.

hmm.... anyone know how to say weekend warrior in German? ;)

The Knoppix.net forums are still a very good resource for Debian and Live CD info. Before Ubuntu came out I used Knoppix as a Debian installer, superb hardware detection and good set of pre-installed applications.

Well Xandros forum is also nice... when I used Xandros they always helped me in every single doubt, I got most of my current basic Linux knowledge from that forum.

I also found Fedora's Forum (http://www.fedoraforum.org/) to be helpful. To bad the distro was not as good as the forum help.

Thats not fair. In some ways Fedora is better than Ubuntu!

I am sure that you are right. However, it wasn't for me.

then I was wrong. That is fair enough.

For some reason LinuxForums.org (http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/) never seems to get much publicity, but I can personally attest to the extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and very patient community that exists at that domain. I guess I am just telling on myself here, but I grew very fond of these people when I was first using Gentoo and was nervous about posting at their home forums.

LinuxForums has a great distro section and I would hang out there for long periods of time and listen to people like Variant and Sarumont. They are still there, posting up and diligently trying to help anyone that walks in the door.

So, thank you very much.

Maybe one day they can have an Ubuntu section. I would post there.

Well, under "Debian" on linuxforums.org:
"Discussions related to Debian (http://www.debian.org) GNU/Linux and debian based distros such as Mepis, Xandros, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and others"

So there is a forum there, but not specifically Ubuntu.

If I can't find something here, I can almost always find an answer to things at gentoo's forums and adapt it to work with Ubuntu.
