View Full Version : [IDEA] Polishing Samba-settings & Mounts

I think it's strange nobody posted it here, but anyway, I believe the "Shared folders" bit (Don't know how it's called in English, never seen it :))
Right now you can activate file sharing over a network in the GUI but you still have to add users through the smbpasswd command, not that it's that hard to do, but if we can improve it, we should.
While we're at it, mounts should be a bit easier to oversee, sometimes I have fat drives that are unwritable, I know where to look, but I can imagine there are some people who never want to see the inside of the fstab file. So, some kind of mount tool would be nice.

I agree, you need to KNOW that you stil have to setup a password for samba for the user. Why not do this automatically?

I also installed samba and got stuck there, but then i asked the IRC channel and it was done.
All in all i have to say:
It was so easy i REALLY liked it!
But i have to ABSOLUTLY agree with Skerit: If it can be improved , it would be perfect!

Samba serving and Samba browsing are currently terrible in Ubuntu. :) The average Ubuntu user doesn't want to mess around with config files and shadow password files.
We need a GUI to configure:
-Remote authentication with Samba DC
-True mounting of Samba shares, reconnecting at boot, and mounted onto the regular file system so non-KDE and non-Gnome apps can see them. It can't be a Gnome VFS or Kioslave hack, it needs to be available under /mnt/net or something.
Sorry to be harsh, but this is a major issue. I tried to switch to Linux at my job, and they rejected it primarily because of the ridiculous amount of time and effort to accomplish what in Windows is called "map a network drive". In Windows it takes 10 seconds. In Linux, I spent like 4 hours.

I guess shares-config should add an option for "easy share" which should add the following lines to the samba shared folder options in smb.conf: "create mask = 0777; directory mask = 0777; force user = nobody; force group = nogroup;" Plus the folder should have nobody:nogroup owner. This would allow people from Windows to access immediately to your folder. However you will then have problems removing files from this folder since you wouldn't have enough rights. In order to have complete access to that folder you have to mount it with the gnome "connect to server" as it was a windows shared folder.
Since this folder is very peculiar, a new directory should be forced such as /home/user/Easyshare.

+1 This is a really important thing for users. Not only new ones. It is not easy enough to get file shares up and running yet.
What about right-clicking on the folder, like windows, and the set the properties, users, aso. Just an idea. I am sure, there are better ways. But this would be much easier then the current solution.

I just recently posted a thread suggesting the same thing - somehow I missed yours in the search. Bleh.
