Lets not forget Legends.

http://legendsthegame.net/

Another worthy addition to the Ubuntu Game Tome.

Unzip and Run.

Thanks a lot for the link, I've never heard of this game. I'll see if I can get this compiled.

I havent had any problems. Ran fine on my 5.04 box.

Gameplay is very Tribes1-ish.

That's because the Tribes engine got open-sourced, and Legends uses it. When I tried it last year it sucked, obviously incomplete - has it matured to playability yet?

I don't think the tribes engine has been open-sourced, and even if it has, Legends is NOT using it. Legends uses a commercial engine and is not open-source, even though they have a linux version. Considering that tribes 1 is freeware now, I would rather just play that with wine.

Yes but Legends is native linux.

Remember, support native linux games or we'll be stuck on running games with wine or cedega for ever! :)

Actually Gil Galad, it is the Torque Engine that Legends uses. And yes, the Torque engine was open sourced some time back, I do believe that Garage Games uses it as its primary graphics engine for most of its games. I think now however that Garage Games retains some rights if you use it.

GarageGames mission is to change the way games are made and played. GarageGames provides the technology, community and market to empower game makers to build commercial quality multiplatform games. Known for bringing the Torque Game Engine to independent developers for $100, GarageGames is located in Eugene, Oregon and on the web at www.garagegames.com and is the annual presenter of IndieGamesCon (Oct. 7-9,2005).

I don't mean to argue with you, but I don't see anything on Garage Games about the Torque engine being open source. If you buy the engine, you do get full access to the source code, but thats the whole point of buying the engine, You certainly cannot share the source with anyone else. I read the Legends License at one point, and I am sure that it was not open source.

Nexuiz is cool but.. all hail Unreal Tournament (1999), never has a 6 year old game look and pla y that good. Yesterday I ran it, and my jaw hit the floor when I say Epic's 6 year old graphics.

Nexuiz is using source code from a 10 year old game and it looks better than UT ;)

To each its own eh? ;). After so many years, I can still pop that disc and a have a Good time. Music is top notch, it's frantically fast and hey, it's even funny :D. Best of all, it's run on very old hardware :D.

P.S. - For anyone wanting to have a quick blast, check out Curveball. It's like, Pong redux http://allthingsflash.com/files/games/curveball.swf :-P

Edit - Ok so the last posters before me where LOTR characters.. freaky O_o

I thought I heard it'd been open-sourced, reading the site I guess I was wrong. $100 is pretty cheap though for such a sexy engine!

BTW I hope they fix the netcode for Nexuiz, it direly sucks. I'd rather play UT any day of the week.

nexuiz is cool but ... I also like ET and cube.

Cube is more matured. Also what I like about cube is the simplicity. Only 4 weapons and no alternative fire modes.

Legends IS using the torque engine. The second sentence on their about page says so. The torque engine is not open source but when you pay the 100 dollars, you get the source code to torque which isn't exactly open source but closer than other engines. Pretty good deal for 100 bucks.

Nexuiz is damn good.. and highly addictive. You can probably catch me often on a populated server. Usually on the top of the frag list  .

UT-GOTY is still great, and I still enjoy that sucker. I bought it for like $10 at Walmart, not even knowing that Linux supported it (I was still transitioning) and when I found a native installer, I was stoked. Still has some of the most smartest bots I've ever seen.

Quake 3 is still a hella good FPS. Graphics are tight, runs *very* smooth on my comp..back when I had a Geforce MX220!

Legends is indeed a good game. I have it here installed, yet I don't really play it as much. I guess I'm still getting used to the Tribes-way of playing. I have T1 installed as well, but I've only played it twice. Kinda hard to get into...

Cube.. now were talkin! That game is a mini addiction.. Simplistic, yet VERY FREAKIN' INTENSE! Play instagib online, and you will know the true meaning of "Fast-paced action!"

Also to throw down some other games, Code Red: Alien Arena was recently released, and its pretty tight. Not very active online, but its got some smart bots on it; and for a Quake2 based game, its graphics are solid.

Paintball2, which is based on Quake2 again, is another..wierd and different game. FPS paintball. Pretty fun and tiny too. Worth a look.
