Hi all :)
While searching the ubuntu forums all over the world for a cd label I had an idea. What about creating a *buntu cd label archive? Well let me explain what I exactly mean. Imagine a page where you could search for labels/covers by using various criterias:
- What kind of buntu? (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu)
- What version? (..., 6.10, 7.04, ...)
- CD or DVD?
- Wich elements? (label, inlay, cover, etc.)
- Language?
Some ideas what the page could offer:
- User/Artist login
- Simple upload functionality for artists
- Comment system
- Rate the labels
- Discussion platform
What resources are required?
- Page-creation team
- Administrators
- Moderators
- Of course artists
- Domain (f.e. www.buntu-labels.org)
- Webspace including server side scripting (f.e. PHP, MySQL)
- Traffic
What could the goals of such a project be?
- Make the access to covers more easy
- Enhance ubuntu popularity
- Enhance the quality of the covers
- Do something for the ubuntu joiners
What do you all think about starting such a project? What do the artists think? Maybe something already exists? Thank you for reading and thinking about!

That would be Great! Maybe make it a wiki so it could easily be updated and/or be added to.
Idea++;

Thank you for your response. What do the others think? Anybody interested in it?

This is a really good idea. I think that it would really help get more people interested in trying out Ubuntu. I know that someone is more likely to use or take a cd with a nice label over one with a sharpie label.

That is very true. Professional looking CDs are always good.
Like I said, a wiki would be good so ppl could update the images as the versions get replaced over time.

Thank you for the feedback! :KS
It sounds like there is at least a small amount of interest in this project. Well, that's at least enough for me to start this.
OK. I am able to freely offer:
- Page programming
- Hosting (including a traffic amount of 400GB a month)
- Paying the domain costs
What do I need from YOU to start?
- A forum in the 3rd party forums here on ubuntuforums.org
- A nice interface
- Translators
- Testers
Any help (ideas, programming, graphics, etc.) is welcome!
What domain name do you suggest?
ubuntu-labels.org ?

Well, PHP would probably be wanted/needed to set up a wiki... http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki is probably something to seriously consider.
For the domain name, ubuntu-labels.org(.com) would probably be just fine. however I don't know how Canonical would not/would like it, might consider contacting them before any actual hosting went under way - just to make sure. I would still buy the domains (if I were you) just in case anybody else had an idea.
I think after the wiki is set up, people like me would love to update parts of it - that's what open source is all about :)
Anyway another ubuntu-labels.org++ && ubuntu-labels.com++ from me
Cheers

Ok, I'm going to write an email to Canonical to ask for the permissions.
Let's have a look at the technical stuff. You suggested a wiki. Well the "problem" with a wiki is the missing database integration as we need it. I think there should be a search function as described in my first post in this thread. This means we have to adapt the wiki to enable such a thing.
I think a wiki would be great to build some kind of knowledgebase (how to print all the various files on blank labels, discussions, etc.) We propably won't get around a own database that enables all the functionalities.

Ok, whatever works and is easy :)
on a side note, I just spent a bunch of time updating Aelfric5578's and french_photon's artwork to be more like what I want. I also made a bunch of extra layers for both the long term and recent releases of Ubuntu (6.06 and 7.04) as well as a layer for each of the different editions (IE all the 32,64bit,SPARC as well as live, alternate, server and DVD editions). so updating it would be really ultra uber easy.
The actual PNG files will be ready as soon as the server is ready :)

I think the intention of this thread is great. I have often searched high and low for CD/DVD covers and am pretty disappointed with the selection available from the official site. But this should really be a joint venture between the marketing team (link to wiki page (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam)) and volunteer artists so we don't start generating multiple sites. There is a DIY page on the wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam/DIYWebsite)which could be the place to direct these very positive energies.

This is a rockingly great idea and should be merged into the nearly almost complete DIY website various people have been working on. You can view the nearly complete code at diy.devubuntu.org.

instead of labels (as thats rather limiting) why not change it to maybe Artwork, and include wallpapers, login screens etc.
and maybe even flyers, posters (i know theres a posters project going on)

Well, since you're not big on wikis, let's go with a Ruby On Rails app...I'll post screenshots of my demo later...

Maybe something temporary to host the labels on would be good... until the DIY website is finished. However all of the labels total 40 MB in a .tar.gz file, (at least the matching set that I put together) so yeah, just to warn you :)

Here are some screenshots of a rough Rails app I whipped up:

Yes, I pasted them together to save some space...

Here is the forum where I posted the original DVD cover artwork: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=38345. There is some good information there including links to derivative works and my artwork source files.
Also, take a look at the posts about the OSI logo usage. In short, don't use it. I spoke with them and they said that I would have to sign a document stating that ALL the software on the disc meets their open source definition. Since this is not the case, the logo cannot be used. You should also seek information regarding the GNU logo.
It makes me feel good to see my original design being used. Here is a French forum where folks made a few versions, including a Kubuntu version: http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=24442. I like what you've done with it. Have you put the source files up anywhere?

Monday night I went ahead and updated my design. An archive of the full SVG file, 300 dpi resolution PNG cover images, and source files can be found at http://www.pegasus.rutgers.edu/~pax/Ubuntu_DVD_Cover-2005.07.24.zip.
The SVG file was created in Inkscape using layers to keep things organized. Go to "Layer > Layers..." to see what I'm talking about. Changing the lower boarder from the PC version to the Mac version is a matter of changing which layers are visible. You can also make the background nonvisible if you don't want to use a lot of ink.
I enter my work into the public domain. All other items such as the Ubuntu logo, Circle of Friends image, and the text probably fall under some license. I got the text from the CD case Canonical sends out. The rest of the images came from the official artwork wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Official.
Any DVD cover art you produce should be mentioned and linked to in the DVD Dover Art (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=38345) forum thread, so we can keep everything in one place.
Enjoy folks!

Okay I am going to assist the ubuntu marketing team to help them get the DIY page running and I might include all the features I talked in the first post. So there will be no new project started! I'll keep you up2date. :)
