I have Ubuntu and noticed this week at the office, a PC that someone installed Fedora Core 6 on it.

I have only used Ubuntu as Linux so far but when looking at Fedora Core 6, I noticed the menu and desktop layouts/design to be very similar to Ubuntu. So that made me wonder if all Linux versions using the same manu/desktop layout/design or has someone started it and everyone is copying on him ?

Nope. Ubuntu uses the Gnome desktop, as do a lot of other distros. There are other desktop environments like KDE, Xfce, fluxbox, and many more. Have a look at Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/), for KDE, and Xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/), for Xfce versions of Ubuntu.

Fedora uses the Gnome desktop environment, just like Ubuntu, and so the general layout looks relatively the same. Other Linux flavors use KDE, the K Desktop Environment. One such variant would be Sabayon. There are many, many different window/desktop managers out there. The previous poster listed a few, but there are many others as well. I'll let other forum members expound on this further. But I hope this helps you out :-)

Of course, most of the environments that provide a menu are moving to adopt the freedesktop.org desktop and menu standards. So they may eventually end up with the same layouts.

The norm for KDE is one panel, one menu. However some distro's (like Sabayon) use two panels and two menus. Also, the norm for gnome is 2 panels 3 menus, but look at mint, it uses one panel and one "menu". So there is a general standard, but any can be made to look very different, be it OOTB by the designer of the distro or by you personally afterwards.
