I have always loved games like tribes2, battlefield 1942 and savage where you work as a team and have support units in addition to soldiers. Although there are games available for free (gratis) for linux like this (savage, enemy territory) none of them are are truly free (libre). Does anyone out there know of a game out there that is free AND with class team support?

try tremulous(.net), it has GPLed source and CC media, so it's free as can be :)

Thanks for the response, I do play tremulous and it's pretty much what I'm looking for (sorry I forgot to mention it). Only issue I have is since there is no incentive to leave the base it ends up being a turtlefest (especially on the human side).

He said free (libre). He wants free-as-in-speech, not free-as-in-beer.

Yepp , the best is true combat elite. Based on the free enemy territory. Very nice graphics and good players.

I really dont know of any free (as in free speech) class-based FPS, except tremoulus and that game sucks pretty much (sorry, but it does compared to ET). It looks like there are room for some improvements there :) The TC:E team savagely guards their source-code. And on a side note, enemy territory is not free software. If it was, the signal 11 so many people is suffering would surely have been fixed a long time ago!

Isn't Legends a Open Source Tribe-like game?

Don't know how active it is, and never tried it myself.

I know legends isn't free (libre) because it's based off the torque engine (same as tribes) which while dirt cheap ($100 I think) still costs something and can't be given out. I figured I just hadn't known where to look but I guess there really *aren't* any good class-based free (libre) FPS games out there. Too bad I'm not a better programmer or I'd try to fix tremulous. I think that game would be great if emphasis was taken away from frags and maybe have 'resource nodes' or something similar to capture so there is an actual POINT to leaving the base. The turtle-fest is my only real gribe with tremulous.

Only game I can find is tremulous which is pretty good with some of the mods out there. Too bad everyone plays the regular version, not the mods.
