i would love to see it happen but i don't think that apple would ever let it fly being a hardware company they draw people in that buy there hardware at a higher price just for the features and stability of osx but if they did it would open up a lot of possibilities for there end users better software choices hardware games etc, and some people would still buy there hardware just because of apples unique designs but just don't expect much support from apple on this.

Online petitions are rarely, if ever, taken seriously. And as pointed out, it's either Jobs' way or the highway at Apple. :?

We the undersigned are hereby requesting that an alternate operating system be available for Intel x86 Heh, all we have to do is get as many people from here as possible to sign the thing and comment in ubuntu.org or kubuntu.org or ubuntuforums.org

Could be more than a fair few prospective converts there ;-)

hay would that include x86_64 or amd64 processors...

Why would I sign for something I don't consider to be positive? Apple is still closed source and proprietary [except for darwin ok] and to me what they charge for hardware and software doesn't make them atractive it makes them a luxury item ,and I do not need luxury. PowerPc, 68000, x86 whatever engine they use they still have tacky interior. [ although smooth ]A computer should be a tool just like an hammer, do you want your hammer with a shellac white cover? Hopefully that OsX plague will stay confined in that Intel-Apple shell, and I say hopefully because how would things work for the free software? And how many people would really buy a copy of OsX kitty-cat when P2P is at arms reach? That is the devil way. [bitter sarcasm]

I want ubuntu and other free software to spread and not the infection.

Michael Dell has expressed interest in selling Mac OSX on Dell laptops .. while Apple has not replied, the fact that one of the world largest pc manufacturers has expressed interest might see it happen.

That said, as pc above says, its not open source :)

Here is how I feel about the swithing to x86 platform... go to the following link to see... (http://homepage.mac.com/m_hiroshi/mac/1024-768pix/ninja1024x768.jpg) but now if it was on the x86_64 bit platform... I would still feel the same way...

Are you requesting that OSX be released so that it runs on any random hardware thrown together by a guy who knows how to find newegg.com?

Mac OSX already runs on x86, as proven by the fact that they're shipping developer systems with Pentium 4's slapped in them..

I assume you guys realise that they've already decided to swtich to intel processors, and are begging for Apple to release their OS without a hardware lock-in?

Darwin's been on X86 for a while, so the move was pretty much foretold.

According to Steve Jobs' keynot speach, so has the whole OS, for a few years now :)

hay you all that petitioned, you are out of luck if you think that you will be able to use Mac OSX on a PC machine...

Why... Here is the proof...

Now that Apple will be using the same processor as Dell, H-P and other competitors, will people be able to run the Mac operating system on these non-Apple machines?

Unless some hacker does a masterful job, the answer is no. Apple intends to keep its operating system and hardware tied tightly together. The new Intel-based versions of the Mac's OS X operating system will be designed so that they cannot run on non-Apple hardware, and Apple has no plans to license OS X to other PC makers.

Quite right. It will supposedly only run on x86s designed exclusively for it sadly. I actually like the PPC architecture though as if I remember right it is more efficient than the x86 line. (someone correct me if I'm wrong.) I actually want a mac, but just dont have the money. I'll eventually get a Powerbook, Mac Mini or iMac one day...

It seems so obvious to me. OSX is the answer to an age old question for me "If my Gamecube can have such neat GUI in the game, why can't my computer have a fancier GUI?" with its extra power? The answer is because the Gamecube, unlike my computer, is a very specific platform. The "magic" of OSX occurs because its on a very particular platform- the magic would go away without the tight lock between the OS and the hardware.

I can't wait till someone hacks OSX to run on Dells and this point is proven once and for all. I bet it will run like crap, the magic will be gone. Apple didn't figure out the $100,000,000,000 question of "how to get an OS to run almost perfectly on commodity hardware," they avoided it. Smart idea I say- its why I talked my sister into getting a powerbook.

the recent news of apple switching to INtel processors is confusing some people I think.

The x86 version that has been in development, from what I understand, may be released to the PC market some day, but not the Intel PPC version. THere is a difference.

Yep. Some day. That day will also be known as: "the day after Steve Jobs died."

Yep. Some day. That day will also be known as: "the day after Steve Jobs died."
or the day that MS stops making Office for the mac and Jobs wants to retaliate. That's what the speculation is.

or the day that MS stops making Office for the mac

Which would be known as "the day after non Mac x86 OSX is released." Its a chicken and egg thing. A lot of the speculators are so despirate for someone to go at MS's marketshare that they can fool themselves into believing anything.
