Based on the Edgy label made by Aelfric (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=285051), I made some covers for Feisty. Here they are :

NICE! love these... now, how would one go about applying this? would you need a printer that can print to CD's, lightscribe, glue?

I used LightScribe for the Ubuntu disk (It works best if you turn the contrast up all the way) and it looks great.

Hi,

Great work, I have a printer that can print directly on printable cd's, but I can't find a suitable program to use in the repositories, anybody have any suggestions?

It would be kind of lame having to boot in Windows to print a label on my Ubuntu CD :)

Thanks

You can use (sticky) printable cd labels... It works well, and only need a little time to adjust the paper to your printer.

Just ask GIMP and Gutenprint to do it. Works perfectly for me with an Epson Stylus Photo 900.

The other make that usually prints to CD is Canon, but you may need to investigate the commercial Turboprint driver (30euro I think) if you have one of those.

How did you turn the contrast all the way up? Not in GNU\Linux I'm guessing?

I used Lacie Lightscribe Labeler in Ubuntu. I am not sure how it works now but I had to use Dapper (chroot) to get it to work. Perhaps it works in efisty but I am not entirely sure as I have not tried it yet.

How did you turn the contrast all the way up? Not in GNU\Linux I'm guessing?

I opened the file in GIMP and then turned up the contrast. I then used Lacie as mentioned above and picked the best contrast option. The labels look pretty nice ... for lightscribe.

4L: LaCie LightScribe Labeler for Linux:
http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10803

See this on how to install Lighscribe Labeler in Ubuntu:
http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Lightscribe

You will basically download two RPMs from the LaCie site and use alien to make DEBs which you will install. Type 4L-gui to run the program. Unfortunately, I've heard that LaCie was working on making it work with Edgy; I don't know how it'll be with Feisty. If I ever try, I will tell you the results. I have Kubuntu Feisty with a LightScribe burner, but no LightScribe discs.

I have Feisty and my first attempt at using the LaCie Lightscribe Labeler worked. The printed image wasn't that dark.... but I'm going to blame myself for not making a high contrast image before printing the label. I'll try again and let you know.

Okay. I scanned the lightscribe disc and here are my results. I thought it turned out pretty good. I'm running Feisty and using the LaCie labeler. I printed on the disc a total of 3 times (I'm sure this can be avoided by using a higher contrasted image in the app)

Hi there.

I am totally new to Ubuntu as I have just downloaded Ubuntu Linux 6.06.1 off the net and will be installing it within the next few days, and then my experience will begin.

I have noticed that you have made several very nice labels, in particular the red and yellow Ubuntu Linux 5.04.

I was wondering would you be able to modify that label for me so as to read version 6.06.1?

If can see your way to do that I would mostly appreciate the effort. Also if it is more convenient for you, then you can email it to me as an attachment.

Next question. I have a labelling program into which I can import pictures and or labels to print, however I noticed that when I ran up your labels they are rather large, much larger than a CD label.

If the label is smaller than a CD, I can stretch them to fit, but I do not know how I would go with your large label.

Any suggestion there?

Final question, what is the difference between all the different spelling variations on Ubumtu, eg. Kubuntu and all the other "...buntu's".

Regards.

Final question, what is the difference between all the different spelling variations on Ubumtu, eg. Kubuntu and all the other "...buntu's".

They use different desktop environments, but share the same repositories and rely on the same underlying architecture.

Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Kubuntu uses KDE.
Xubuntu uses Xfce.
Edubuntu is an exception; it uses Gnome, but is made for schools and purely educational purposes.

"Kubuntu is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the KDE environment instead of GNOME."

"Edubuntu is a officailly supported derivative of Ubuntu that is customised for Education use."

"Xubuntu is an official derivative of Ubuntu using the Xfce desktop environment. It is intended for users with less-powerful computers, or those that require a highly efficient desktop environment on faster systems. Xubuntu features primarily GNOME applications."

I strongly recommend against using sticky CD labels. The glue can seep through and damage the information on the CD.

I ripped all my CDs a year and a half ago when I built my new computer. The only ones I had problems ripping all had sticky labels. DO NOT USE THEM!

Hi,

Love the labels and thanks for them. Can you make a cd case cover and tray card too or maybe a dvd cover. Also like another user asked how would you go about changing the label to reflect the new versions that come out? What program do you need to use and what would be the steps.

The file is available as a .xcf which is opened with GIMP. From there, you can change different layers (say switch between kubuntu and ubuntu themes), and change the individual text.

This is the original thread. I'd put a direct link to the .xcf files, but there are multiple ones mentioned in there and I'm not sure which one you guys want.
AFAIK, the .xcf should have kubuntu and ubuntu layers, just make the appropriate layers visible/invisible and voila!

Hi everybody,

I am sorry for not being over here, but I have got some trouble with my internet connection for 2 months yet...
Luckily, I just installed Feisty on a computer, with a proper connection, and I am able to make the dvd covers... Here they are :

http://www.zimagez.com/miniature/cdcoverubuntu7-04livedvd.png (http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/cdcoverubuntu7-04livedvd.php) http://www.zimagez.com/miniature/cdcoverkubuntu7-04livedvd.png (http://www.zimagez.com/zimage/cdcoverkubuntu7-04livedvd.php)

Unfortunately, I've got the .xcf file, but no server to upload it... If someone is able to host it, it is available on a temporary server for 5 days here at this link :
Edit : See on dfreer's server (http://www.dfreer.org/ubuntu/) to download the .xcf.

I'd highly recommend (again) that you don't do that. The glue from the labels can, over time, seep through the protective foil layer of the disc and affect the actual data layer. I've had this happen with many of my own discs; I put labels on them, then a couple years later went to rip them, and had all sorts of trouble.

I'm really glad for your help, but I was talking about a real more complex website, including Php and so on, managing covers automatically... But since at this time, nobody seems to be interested...

Then, (only in the case of this project became a reality !) if you are able to host a complete Php website for english and french covers, then we don't need Tuxfamily at all. ;)

Don't worry, at this time, your server is still very useful, thanks, and it will be for the upcoming gutsy. ^^

My server runs PHP5 and MySQL, and you can continue using it as long as needed, simply as a mirror if needed. I don't have time to design a website for this myself (yep, see my main page for a clue lol), but if you make the pages I can put them up. virtual host name is also an option (if you want, say, http://cdcovers.dfreer.org instead of http://www.dfreer.org/ubuntu/).

EDIT: unless you want to simply use the template I already made, see http://packages.dfreer.org for a "somewhat" working example. Just an offer.

All right ! Don't worry about the code, I know enough Php to be able to do such a website, and I've got an host to test it. But indeed, you're welcome if you want to do something. ;)

Some people are interested on the french forum, finally : indeed, there is no place to find covers and cases easily. Forums and wikis could be useful, but not as useful as a site like gnome-look.org for Gnome...
