I've always been a big fan of tribes2 however I haven't really been able to play since I only have the windows version and the linux binaries weren't released. I've been looking for a replacement to that game but haven't been able to find one and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations. I don't like legends at all (no vehicles and farming has been nerfed). Savage and UT2004 are both close to what I'm looking for (especially UT2004's onslaught mode) but I would prefer games that are GPL'd and not just have linux binaries. Closest I've found so far is tremulous (which is pretty good) except all games are just humans turtling with aliens trying to break in until stage3.

True Combat Elite ala Counter Strike is an objective based FPS.
For that matter so is Enemy Territory (not quake wars, though I think quake wars has some of that too).

I'd noticed enemy territory before but it looked like just a demo/beta for a game activivision was planning on selling eventually. Based off your suggestion I did some reasearch and could hardly believe to find out they released the source, sure it's hard to find and they don't mention it on their website but it is available for download off the internet. Guess I'll have to download it and see if it's any good.

Speaking as a more outspoken member of the UGA, I can easily attest to a variety of such related FPS and such styled games.
http://www.truecombatelite.net/ - True Combat Elite
http://openarena.ws/?about - OpenArena
http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/ - Nexuiz
http://www.urbanterror.net/news.php - Urban Terror (can use Ioquake engine)
http://padworld.myexp.de/ - Padman's World
http://www.warsow.net/ - Warsow

I play nexuiz whenever I want just a straight deathmatch fragfest game but sometimes you just want an objective oriented FPS.

Urban terror is an amazing game but there aren't that many servers or players (at least since the last time I played)
REALLY great game.

None of the objective-based games suggested here are actually open source though, more like selfish source
