Hi

How does RHEL Desktop version 4 compare to Ubuntu? Would it be limiited in terms of the latest versions of software? Would it be possible to have an older version of LAMP on it like I can with (K)Ubuntu? I've currently got PHP4.x and mysql 4.x on Kubuntu Edgy.

Thanks

I might just wait and see what Red Hat offers later this year. I'll save my money for now.

Have fun

Just download CentOS 5. It is Red Hat 5, just free (RH is gpl, so if you remove the copyrighted logo's you are free to distribute it). If you want RH4 just get CentOS 4, etc.

RHEL is basically design to never fail. The packages it gets are well tested and the entire system gets updates for seven full years. The drawback is that the package versions themselves don't change, so you won't get the latest and greatest.

Ubuntu, OTOH is the opposite, Unless you use LTS, Ubuntu releases every 6 months and the packages are fairly up-to-date, but they're only supported for 18 months. The drawback is that you do sacrifice some stability with this release cycle. This is why people say RHEL/CentOS is the best for a server and Ubuntu is best for the desktop.
