I was wondering what people's experiences have been like running empire at war and battlefront 2 under cedega 6.0. I was thinking of getting vista with my tax return money, but if I can play those games just fine under cedega, then I will do that. Save me a few pennies too.

Read up on Vista and see that it offers worse performance for games than XP.
To check if they work in Cedega, use google. But whatever you do, don't buy Vista, get XP instead.

the reason why I would not want to buy xp is because it is an os that is going to be started to be phased out by Microsoft. Also, vista will get faster as the system is streamlined and better drivers are written. Also, why would I want to buy last gen software?

Because it works better than 'next gen'? Do you want to play games now or hope to in 2 years?
XP is going to be supported by gamemakers for a long time and, all games made up to that point will play perfectly of course.

... xp won't be phased out for a long time, and the it won't be phased out anymore than windows 2000 has been (are you aware of how many users still use win2k?). It works (sadly) a hell of alot better than vista, and alot of people will never switch. Even microsoft has admited vista is a failure, make sure you know your facts before ranting.

I know that a lot of people are still using old versions of windows. At my mom's school where she works, they still have win98 on all of their computers, but fortunately they are going to Novell enterprise next year. I have a win98 box at my house, but I am looking for new features, many of which I get in feisty. now the only thing lacking is good support for games. win98 is being phased out and doesn't run anything past JK3 really. I was wondering what people's experiences have been like using Cedega. Since it is only $15, I will probably buy a subscription just to try it out and see if I like it. Other than games, linux is great for everything else. Well, video editing is lacking too.

It's a hit and miss game with Cedega. Some games work, most don't, and most games that work have issues.
I'd say try Cedega out first, you may never know. Cedega has a nice database which states what games run in what fashion, and with google you can find a lot too. My gamelist in Cedega:
GTA: Vice City - works flawlessly.
GTA: San Andreas - everything works, but has a severe performance hit.
Max Payne 2 - works very good, but sometimes theres no sound.
Warhammer: Dark Crusade - voices are choppy, runs good otherwise.
Simcity4: Rush Hour - AOK, but has a performance hit and a lot of soundeffects are not there.
Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds:Clone Campaigns - Runs OK, sometimes a little laggy.
Half Life 2: Runs good, but I can't select the higher graphics settings.
With wine: Mafia - runs great, but the sound is sometimes a garbled, sometimes not.
So, I have a partition with XP handy, for all the good games that don't run. XP plays all games now fine, and the DX10-only games are ways off. I'd say look out for a cheap copy of XP Home (or pirate it for all I care). Vista has no benefits for gaming in the forseeable future (read up on the videodrivers, ATi and NVidia pretty much admit Vista sucks bigtime and the blame it for their bad drivers) and when it finally will, I think the next version of Windows will be just around the corner (MS stated somewhere that they didn't want the next release to take as long as Vista, 2-3 years IIRC). Perhaps Cedega/Wine will have made some new inroads that make commercial gaming on Linux more and more possible by then so that Windows isn't needed at all anymore.

This is kind of an investment thing for me and I appreciate everyone's feedback. I am still not sure if I will get vista yet, but with the drivers getting better, it may have a chance. Also, I wouldn't want to use XP at all because it is getting to be an older OS in my mind. Like I have said before, why go last gen? I am a supporter of linux and everything that it stands for, but I find that a Star Wars gaming addiction can be settled in Windows or, if it is good enough, Cedega. I will try out Cedega because it is cheap, but I am still skeptical. If I can use pure linux, then I will. I am also looking for performance that is close to if not on par with native performance. for me and gaming, performance outweighs some factors, while my high values and opinions of software make me want to stay linux.
It all rests on Cedega's shoulders now. I will purchase Empire at War or Battlefront 2 and Cedega. It if works to my expectations, then I will stay there. But if it does not work well, then to Vista I go for gaming only, nothing else. that is what linux is for, everything else until better support is out there. I am willing to tweak and mess around with the program so I am not like a complete noob that only wants things to work out of the box. Thank You for your opinions and my little 2 cents, Vista will just need time because Micro$oft made a big jump with this OS and just need a little time. Also, I hope that this is the beginning of the end for M$ because I would like to game cheaply, it makes more sense.
Go Linux & Ubuntu!

Empire at war works under native wine as does battlefront :)
