Debian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential, Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.

I agree with the time based release cycle.

I don't know much about LSB ...... I assume he's right.

about the common core ... it's great if every package in debian also works in ubuntu and vice versa ..... but this only makes sense IMO if the release cycle of debian is not too long ..... maybe 12 months.

Can't happen. Sarge is already behind Hoary, and lacks many thing Hoary has (xorg for one). Compatibility is kinda a pipe dream. I mean, things might work (like SOME Mandrake RPMs work on Fedora) but it can never be perfect without holding back Ubuntu in the same way Debian is.

Personally I think that "testing" and "unstable" branches have a better future. Provide a base for other projects and provide new packages without commiting to a release. Let Ubuntu/Mepis/Kanotix/etc make releases instead.

Of course, this is my opinion and Ian Murdock would REALLY not agree with me.

I agree with poofyhairguy, Ubuntu is far more ahead than Sarge, and I think that a natural step in Ubuntu would be to divarge from Debian, cuz it's implementing updated software, as poofyhairguy say xorg it's the best example.

You are right. But IMO if the next debian gets released in 12 months and does contain x.org .. then we might get a common core ... but this won't happen I think.

12 months? If it is less than 18, I will eat a whole jalapeno (and post pictures here).

I have to say, that is the best idea I have heard yet!

If Debian put out that they are not even trying to put out an actual release, but has one Stable version, and the Testing version. Make a system for any packages to be updated and tested in the testing version, of course. Then some board has to approve it before being built into the stable version. When a distribution, like Ubuntu, goes to update, they just take the stable image and run with it.

(Or did you just say that)

Jalapenos are FABULOUS, but they are hot...I eat them all the time, but I grew up on them. If any of this happens, Arizona is the best source for the peppers. BTW, habaneros are hotter!

If that happens, I'll send you some jalapeņos from Mexico, and even some chilpaya, those are super-extra hot, even I can't eat one of those.

The only condition is that you have to send me the pictures of the whole eating...

I live in the netherlands. Please send me some jalapenos if debian promises to not make any releases anymore. I'll make the pictures. :-P
