View Full Version : Chess in 3D mode

I just installed the new Feisty Fawn and I can't play chess in 3D because my "system does not have the required software to enable 3D mode".

What packages do I need to install?

Thanks.

Hello,

Sounds like you need to install video card drivers (what video card do you have ?) Try to include your system specs with posts for help, it makes helping easier :)

3D works on screensavers, so I don't think it's drivers. Here's the whole message:
Your system does not have the required software to enable 3D mode. Please contact your system administrator and ask them to install the OpenGL Python bindings and the GtkGLExt Python bindings.

You are still able to play chess in 2D without these packages.

Do you have python-opengl and libgtkglext1 installed?

The same thing happens to me and I have drivers installed.

Yes, I have tried that already.

I suggest trying BrutalChess from the Add/Remove under Applications.

3d chess with reflection of the chessmen
This is a 3d chess with reflection of the chessmen. It has got a
built-in ai player. The movements are animated.

This is really slow on my system until I tweek out Aiglx in my Xorg. Default agp1x instead of 4x for my system really puts a dent in my gaming in Feisty. Might have to go back to Edgy for my Video Card drivers to function for gaming. :(

Still no mention of System specs. ? If you say your drivers are set up correctly then my guess would be that the game is unfinished or files left out when packaging ?

I had the same problem when I tried, tracked down the makers website, and followed their apt-get package command. After that it worked for me:

apt-get install python2.4 python-gtk2 python-glade2

:)

apt-get install python2.4 python-gtk2 python-glade2
did not work for me.... nvidia driver installed..
I already had those packages..

For some reason the Python gtkglext package isn't available for Ubuntu through the package manager... go download and install python-gtkglext1_1.1.0-2feisty_i386.deb from here (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6348&package_id=179437) to fix (you'll also need the aforementioned python-opengl package, which IS available through the package manager...).

Worked for me.

But the game is? If so the people who (want to) play this game should bug report it.

eh... that was NOT worth it.. looked like **** (no offense).
Anyone know how to rotate?

DoktorSeven
April 24th, 2007, 03:46 PM
No rotation or anything seems to be possible, just a bad perspective of the chessboard.

No 3d or anything, but I still like eboard as my GUI chess game of choice.

Thanks cstudent. That worked, though, as olejorgen said, it really isn't worth it. Chintzy 3D that looks awful. The 2D interface is much better looking.

I installed ubuntu feisty fawn from LiveCD. To enable 3D mode in chess I installed additional packages:

1. python-opengl_2.0.1.09.dfsg.1-0.3_i386.deb http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/feisty/python/python-opengl

2. libgtkglext1_1.0.6-2.1ubuntu1_i386.deb http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/feisty/libs/libgtkglext1

3. python-gtkglext1_1.1.0-2feisty_i386.deb http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6348&package_id=179437

Hi people. As blitzer (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2500029&postcount=7) already suggested, the alternative is to install BrutalChess, which looks a lot better, but the A.I. is very weak compared to glchess (plus they're working on very good looking wooden textures (http://brutalchess.sourceforge.net/) now).

*Wow. It seems like BrutalChess is all I talk about nowadays... Geez...

Does anybody know the answer??? Help????:(

RomeReactor

HI livearevolution. If you mean the answer to enable the 3D aspect of the default chess game (glchess, part of gnome-games), then DoktorSeven (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2510684&postcount=11) already answered that; it seems to be a bug, as A.I. said (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2512910&postcount=12).

Yep I also have been disappointed in any 3d chess for linux.

I assumed Linux=Geek=3d Chess. And there would be a slew of 3d chess for linux.
Boy was that stereotype blown away.

Has the 3D glChess worked on a AMD64 version of Fiesty??

The GTKGLExt libs for python seem to be available only for i386

I now have a procedure on my website that will allow you to install 3D support for glChess.

I hope this helps.

Hi

If you want 3D Chess to work, you should install
python-opengl and python-gtkglext packages.
Those are the two packages that fixed my problems
with 3D Chess. As for the libgtkglext1 package, it doesn't appear
to do anything, at least on my machine.

Reply if this fixed the problem :)
