I'm thinking about getting a cheep multitrack recording thing that i've seen on ebay. I have a band and this tape recorder thing is not cutting it. I have seen some with all sorts of connecters on the back. My question is, do these things work in linux?

If you mean multichannel/track audio interfaces, FFADO (was FreeBob) is the place to look at:

well after sleeping on it, I've decided that it might be cheaper to connect the outputs of the mixer/amp to a sound card. What do I need to make that possible?

Pretty much any supported sound card / USB sound card should work.
