View Full Version : Requesting New Packages for Inclusion in Gutsy Universe
23meg
April 19th, 2007, 08:47 PM
The procedure for suggesting new packages for inclusion in Universe has recently been changed (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-motu/2007-March/001471.html). The new procedure is as follows:
* Check the list of packages that have already been requested (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=needs-packaging) and make sure the package you want isn't there. The package may already be in progress in Debian, so it also helps to take a look at Debian's work-needing and prospective packages (http://www.us.debian.org/devel/wnpp/) to make sure it isn't.
* If there isn't a request, file a bug (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug-advanced?field.tags=needs-packaging) in Ubuntu and tag it with "needs-packaging" (the link should take you to a page where the tag is readily placed). Providing a brief description of the software and why you want it packaged in the summary is a good idea; see the existing bug reports for examples.
* For packages that are in Debian, but not in Ubuntu, file a bug with the summary field "please sync package <packagename> from debian <distro>" where <packagename> is the package you would like to see. This should be done a while after the sync with Debian has started, if the package hasn't appeared.
If you need help with the procedure, feel free to ask questions. If you don't have a Launchpad account and don't want to have one, or are uncomfortable with the process for another reason, post your request here and the Forum Ambassadors team (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=235) will handle it for you.
If you want to package software yourself for inclusion in Universe, start here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Packages/New/HowTo).

(And please note that your package will be far more likely to get done if you either package it yourself (see the last link) or get someone else to do it for you)

Well I submitted a bug for QtCurve (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/109811). It's the best widget style ever, I think it should be default in any KDE distro, it's works a lot better that GTK-Qt
Just a question, what do we do if we want a package updated? rtorrent and libtorrent have newer versions in Debian Unstable, Torcs has a new version but it's not in Debian yet ( although it's a few months old  ).
23meg
April 25th, 2007, 12:14 AM
If newer versions are in Debian, they should arrive when the sync with Debian starts. For those that aren't in Debian, you can place requests in both Debian and Ubuntu.

You dont vote. You do the work in getting it into the repositories. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Documentation for more info.

Distribute etree files for handling live recordings in flac.
etree-scripts (http://sourceforge.net/projects/etree-scripts/) is a great set of scripts that I mainly use to convert my legally downloaded live shows in flac from hundreds of bands/artists on dimeadozen.org and other places. flacify is one of the executables: What makes flacify great is that it takes a txt-file and flacs in a directory, and modifies the flacs with metadata and some other things.
See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=451368 for more info.

ThinkFinger: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/117654
khdapsmonitor: The patch needed for it to work was rejected (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.19/+bug/53927), so perhaps it won't be very useful.
kthinkbat: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/117658
hdapsd: Already in Gutsy (http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/misc/hdapsd).
eawpats: Looks like some of the patches had IP issues, and it's discontinued, reborn as Freepats (http://freepats.opensrc.org/), which is already in Universe (http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=freepats&searchon=names&subword=1&version=all&release=all).
cinelerra: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/105907
bioapi: See this related blueprint (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/fingerprint-authentication) and this bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/54816).
kopete with jingle and qq: I think you should file these as bugs in Kopete if they aren't already in the Gutsy version. Check for existing bugs first.
kernel with hdapsd, suspend2, tp_smapi: Does hdapsd require something in the kernel? I'm pretty sure suspend2 won't be carried by Ubuntu unless it goes mainline, and tp_smapi seems to have been dropped (https://bugs.beta.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/85748) recently.

What do you do if Debian has the package but does not have the latest stable version?
For example Ogre3D is in Debian but its not the latest version (wishlist bug here (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/118201)) but it is needed if you want to run Thouse Funny Funguloids! (http://funguloids.sourceforge.net/) (wishlist bug for that here (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/118203)).
I don't have any experience and time for doing these things myself but I sure do hope someone can pick up the torch. :D

You file the bug in the debian bugtracker, as a wishlist. The majority of packages ubuntu doesnt touch anyway, so no one will look at the ubuntu bugs for the package.
Also, it should be tagged as upgrade, not needs-packaging, i believe, as needs-packaging is only for new packages.

added a package request for Banter: a new telepathy based IM/Voip client that includes integrated and working video, voice, and text chat. http://live.gnome.org/Banter
Development is currently in sprint mode and a stable 0.2 release will hopefully be out in a month. dependencies are tough right now because of the use Sharp libraries...if any one gets this up and working, i'd love to know how.
fsf@rula
June 10th, 2007, 07:18 AM
Well, banter already has VOIP and VIDEO support for jingle, it is pretty easy to compile, but not on ubuntu, as (banter devs say:) gst and/or gst-farsight is too old, and telepathy is too old on ubuntu too. We should add requests for those too, as the ubuntu devs are not sure to know why it wont work/compile. There is a SUSE repo for banter, so it would be a MUST for gutsy, as I said, at least one IM client with jabber VOIP and video support would be needed, to displace skype as the #1 voip client. Jingle is completely p2p, so it is jabber server independent.

I'm humbly requesting an update to the package "libmp4v2" which is almost two and a half year old, now. The version numbering used by Ubuntu, is a little odd, by the way, because the latest version is 1.5.0.1 and not 2.0.0.
Anyway, the improvements would be the ability to modify tags of AAC audio files which most programs including EasyTag or Amarok can't do at the moment, due to the ancient version of libmp4v2 Ubuntu ships with.
The Debian-Multimedia repository features the most recent version, by the way, so porting it from Debian might be the easiest solution, although it would also require porting libmpeg4ip, as well.
By the way, backporting it to Feisty and the others would be swell ;)

Maybe I should have asked for syncing libmpeg4ip, instead... I know that it is in Debian-multimedia, but it's been there for quite some time, already without showing signs of being synced to either Feisty or Edgy.

Gnofract 4D
Description: easy creator of beautiful fractals
Gnofract 4D is an elegant creator of mathematical images called fractals. What sets it apart from other fractal programs (and makes it "4D") is the way that it treats the Mandelbrot and Julia sets as different views of the same four-dimensional fractal object. This allows you to create images which are a cross between the two sets and explore their inter-relationships. It is written in PyGTK.

Hey, I don't know if this is the right place to suggest software for inclusion in the repositories, but I really think ProjectM deserves to be added. It's a visualizer plugin for XMMS and Amarok (and probably others). It's basically an OpenGL reimplementation of Milkdrop, and it's head and shoulders above any other visualizers I've seen on Linux. Almost every other Linux visualizer I've seen has only one or two different patterns, but ProjectM has tons, and it's even compatible with Milkdrop files so you could add more.

Can be sdlmame added to repositories???
xmame is not supported anymore (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xmame/+bug/125738) and mame package roms elder than 0.106 are difficult to find now.
I think it can be a good new on Gutsy

As I understand, there's a lot of ambiguity with Truecrypt's licensing, thus it seems unlikely to enter the repositories.

I would like to see TrueCrypt in the repositories too.

I'm no good reading legalese, but surely could we not petition to have it put in the multiverse repository instead?
TrueCrypt License: http://www.truecrypt.org/license.php
Edit: alternatively, we can provide a wrapper to build from source manually. After a quick google I found this: https://code.launchpad.net/truecrypt-installer

Just in case someone considers putting SDLMame into the repositories, there is a guy called c.falco who builds Ubuntu packages on a regular basis. Get them at this (http://www.bannister.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=28714&page=1#Post28714) thread. Furthermore, the most recent sources can be found here (http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/). Builds like a breeze.

Update GParted! It hasn't been updated since 0.2.5, and there are many new features in 0.3.3.

Kxmame 0.2 SVN
In kxmame 0.2 svn has been added support to sdlmame wich is neccesary to run latest roms.
kxmame in gutsy is the 2.0 beta as in feisty, can it be updated?

Actually I'd prefer QMC2 (http://www.mameworld.net/mamecat/). Say, could it be that we already had this discussion once in this thread? It's feeling like deja vu.

I'm closing and unsticking this thread, since we're past the deadline for new packages in Universe.
For instructions on requesting packages for Universe in future versions, and packaging software for Universe yourself (no, you don't have to be a MOTU), see the first post in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2487111&postcount=1). Thanks for your cooperation.
