Gnome theme question

How do I customize panels so that it looks like the one on the bottom of the screen in this picture?

I'm not sure what image they are using as the background, but if you can find it just right click on the panel and click properties and under the "background" tab select "background image" and use whatever you want. To get it to not fill up the screen uncheck the "expand" box under the "general" tab. You can also set the transparency. If you move the slider over all the way it will be invisible and show your wallpaper behind it. I am using a glass image for mine. I cangive you the link for it if you want.

You can just save these to your computer and try them. They are not viewable on the white background. Just right click on the page and click select all and you will see them.

I think he/she/they is/are using a composite manager (beryl or something) (note the shadow on the bar at the top) but I am not sure because there are no shadows on the windows.

If he is using a composite manager, then he is probably using Avant Window Navigator (http://code.google.com/p/avant-window-navigator/), customized of course. Instructions to install on EDGY (http://awn.wetpaint.com/page/Ubuntu+Edgy+Repository), FEISTY (http://awn.wetpaint.com/page/UbuntuFeistyHowTo). The software is pretty stable, but you MUST HAVE A COMPOSITE MANAGER FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY (Beryl, Compiz, tuts on the forums, search . Try to find the most recent tutorial possible, bewared as well it isn't for beginners. ).

Otherwise he is using some sort of widget, most likely a gDesklet (should be in repos, install from Synaptic)

Also, as others said, he/she/they could just be using a custom background or whatever customization GNOME offers by default.

It's not the transparency that I want. I want to get the panel to just have the icons on it and not go across the entire length of the screen. I got the image off of gnome-look.org. So I am assuming that they are just using gnome. I'm not looking for the effects as much as I am the function of the panel.

Right click the panel and click properties. Then just uncheck the expand option.

Sorry I figured out what you meant like two seconds after I posted that last post. Now that I have figured it out how do I get rid of the background on the icon itself? I am still left with a square around the image.

It depends on the icon. Some of them aren't very good quality images. If some of them still have "squares" behind them, you probably can't get rid of it. The best thing to do is to install an icon theme you like from http://gnomelook.org/ or http://art.gnome.org/
You can also choose some preinstalled icons in the theme manager. Click on SYSTEM>PREFERENCES>THEME and click on the customize button on the right. You can change icons, window borders, colors, etc. If you find something you like and download it you can just drag it onto the theme manager window to install it.

if typing in 'killall gnome-panel' on the commandline doesn't work, then it is a bug in the gtk theme. try a different gtk theme.
