Printer Image as Poster using several pages

I'm trying to figure out how to print an image 10'x8' (yes, feet) using the Gimp in such a way that distributes the image across several sheets of 8"x11" paper.

I know there utilities and plugins for Photoshop to do such a thing, but I want a GNU way to do it.

Sounds an odd solution, but spreadsheet softwares are generally quite good at "spreading" a content on several pages. For sure OpenOffice Calc does it well.
