Ok, I have been hard at work on the next release of Ubuntu CE. Here is a screenshot of what is the planned new look for the Desktop.

The verse on the desktop is not static, it is a desklet that I put together specifically for Ubuntu CE.

The wallpaper has been reworked to blend the Feisty wallpaper and the Ubuntu CE Edgy wallpaper. It also serves as a frame for the Bible verse desklet.

The Ubuntu "start button" has been replaced with a more "vista-ish" button based on the new Ubuntu CE logo provided by our latest Team member, Bodizzle (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=272409).

The top and bottom panels now have a translucent background effect.

I would love to hear what you all think.

These are all proposed changes and may change before the actual release. :)

God Bless, Jereme

It looks great.

I like the faded transparency on the taskbar. Keep up the Good work

I'm not an Ubuntu CE user, so my opinion might not count very much, but since you asked for feedback, here are a few comments.

1. The verse in the Ubuntu logo looks nice and stylish. (Is that desklet available separately? Just curious)
2. The Menu icon
*The start/menu button is way too prominent. The colours are too bright, and the contrast with the rest of the desktop is too large (I guess especially if an application that would cover the desktop like Firefox or OpenOffice is open.
*I can't really tell whether the bottom panel is actually quite large/high, or if that is an optical illusion created by the menu icon. I get that impression more on that side of the panel than on the other side (clock). In any case, the menu icon is too big. I'd make a smaller, simpler one.
* The logo of Ubuntu and/or Ubuntu CE is not very visible in the menu icon, which makes it look really odd. Only one of the three heads is visible, which makes it at first hard to recognise as the ubuntu logo. Simpler would be better. No need to cramp as much into that icon as possible (as with an ubuntu logo with a fish inside)
3. The attempt to merge the Feisty and CE desktop didn't quite work, imo. The lower right corner, with the Ubuntu logo and daily Bible verse looks fine, but the rest looks messy. Especially the central part of the desktop. If one doesn't know that this is a merge of two other desktops, the central lighter streak looks very odd, messy and ugly. Perhaps a simple gradient with the colours of the upper left corner and lower right corner would work. Now it looks very unprofessional. The old desktop image worked better.
4. Why do you have two panels? From screenshots of Ubuntu CE Edgy, I can tell that the window list (with all the open windows) is placed on the bottom panel, and the top panel is only used for the pager, deskbar and rubbish bin. You loose a lot of screen space by having two panels, and since you hardly use the top one, you might as well either remove it or move some of the functions of the bottom one to the top. I think the clock, for example, would look better on the top panel (it would also give you more space for the windows list on the bottom panel.
5. The gradient on the panel looks neat, but a little 'dirty', I think.

Hi Jereme,

I really like the new start/menu button! Great job bodizzle! I believe the emphasis was put in the right place, and you can still tell it is the Ubuntu logo.

A couple things that could be taken from the start/menu button and incorporated into the desktop would be: to make the color of the desktop to match the brown in the upper part of the button (at least it looks dark brown or burnt orange to me, if not a dark brown would be nice with the orange, gold & red tones); and if possible to make the Ubuntu logo on the desktop glassy/3d'ish like the logo on the button, since I believe the globe in the center of the logo is 3d.

I do like the gradient on the panels, as it makes the panels blend into the desktop; otherwise, I usually turn my panels to transparent.

The addition of the desklet is awesome, as I wanted this without having to install myself.

Great job! I look forward to upgrading! :)

God Bless,
Randy

I do use both panes. At first I wasn't too big on the idea of an additional pane taking up my screen, after coming from Windows, but now I appreciate its usefullness.

Thanks! I will probably release Ubuntu CE v3.0 (Feisty) a week or two after the official Feisty release. This will give me time to do the final testing and what not.

Thanks for your input. I welcome any and all feedback.

Yes, the "Bible RSS" desklet will be released individually with the next release.

The idea behind the new "start" button is to be in a "vista-ish" style. The panel is larger and I do know that the entire logo is not visible. To me it is a stylish way to display it. I will wait to see what others think and I will of course give it some thought.

I agree the background needs some work. I have attached a screenshot that should look better as far as the background is concerned.

The reason for the two panels is this. I want the Desktop to be comfortable for new Linux users who are more accustomed to Windoze. I also wanted to introduce them to the ability to have multiple panels. It is sort of a Linux/Windoze blend.

Thanks for your inputs and I am glad that you like the work. The desklet is probably my favorite addition. I am glad that you like the new "start" button.

Below is a screenshot that includes the updated background. I think it looks a bit more polished. I realize that the new "start" button is very contrasting, but that is kind of the Window-ish look that I was shooting for. Also the screenshot below includes a few panel features that will not be in the final release. (It is my current desktop)

I like the new style an also the new start button! But for me (I have a widescreen notebook) it is not very good that the whole panel takes more place away from my desktop. I would prefer the same size as in v2.2...

(Just wondering why the screen is brown and not blue!?)

Thanks for your comments. I am still playing with the size of the panel.

The desktop is brown because Ubuntu CE uses the same look as the default Ubuntu. There was some discussion on making Ubuntu CE blue, but I believe it will be staying with the brownish orange for now.

Thanks, Jereme

At Jereme, as always well done for your work, although I do have a question, being:

Can I upgrade from UbuntuCE 2.2 to Ubuntu Feisty Fawn or would I have to wait the release of the new CE version? I'm dying to check the new Feisty Fawn but I definitely am not installing a whole new OS again.

Thank you very much for your kind words.

The method to move from Ubuntu CE v2.2 (Edgy) to Ubuntu CE v3.0 (Feisty) would be two fold. First you would do a dist-upgrade to Feisty. Second you would run the convert_me script for Ubuntu CE v3.0 (Feisty).

Now with that said, it can be problematic doing a dist-upgrade. In fact I have personally never had much success with doing a dist-upgrade. I would rather do a complete fresh installation of the latest release.

Hmmm, "problematic" as in risky for data loss? I'm in quite a busy period and have a HDD full of data (of which most of it now is in the Linux partitions) so backing up all the stuff would actually be relatively too time-consuming for myself. Plus, losing the data, with all the study material would be annoying. Actually, most of my stuff is backed up but having to restore it all is time-consuming. Could that be avoided in a way and resorted to only as an "emergency"?

When you refer to a dist-upgrade do you specifically mean from an Ubuntu CE release (which sort of runs over a regular Ubuntu release) to a regular Ubuntu release? As personally I upgraded from Ubuntu CE to a new Ubuntu CE with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks for all your help, and great work once again.
God Bless you,

Jereme,

Wow, I think it looks great. I plan on downloading it and installing it, probably a fresh install. I really like the look. As far as the Background part, just out of curiosity, how many people actually keep the original background? What I mean is don't kill yourself over it, it doesn't stay on my screen more than a day. :) I really like the Bible verse, that is sharp! Will it look that good on any background? Is there an easy way of modifying the colors, and display so that it could/would fit on any desktop background? I have an adesklets one that I use/made. Attached is a screen shot. Is this through adesklets or gdesklets? Also do you need to be connected to the web for it? It would be nice if it pulled it straight from the gnomesword files off the computer, so it wouldn't need to be connected to the web to see the verse. Just some thoughts. It really looks nice. Look forward to the release. Do you have any target date you are shooting for?

He was trying to quote one of Jereme's posts.

I am going to try the Feisty dist-upgrade soon the same way I did with Edgy (got to install a few hundred updates first and wait for the load to lessen on the upgrade servers). I would just do the dist-upgrade through update-manager first, then add Automatix repos and things. It should work fine, but I wouldn't try it on any installation with important files without a backup.

I did an upgrade when Fiesty was still in beta. It seemed to work ok. I did have to install gnome-desktop first this was about a month ago. It said it didn't recognize what desktop I was using and didn't know how to upgrade me. After installing gnome-desktop the upgrade procedure was a little confusing for me. It asked me if I wanted to overwrite config files, not wanting to loose them I didn't overwrite them. Also for Dan's Guardian, it gave me an error. After all night downloading all the files, and then an hour running through upgrades, it said that it failed. However when I rebooted, all ran well, and it was Fiesty under the hood, and running smooth. I don't know the right answers to the config files questions, probably should have it overwrite them to be on the safe side. Also, I think I had to grab the Dan's guardian deb and re-install it, had problems with my internet. You may want to have that deb on hand before upgrading in case you need to re-install it. :)

That is my experience with the last upgrade. Hope that helps a little.

By dist-upgrade I mean going from one release of Ubuntu to another. Like going from Edgy to Feisty. Using the upgrade_me script to go between versions of a given release is fairly easy. I have just never had much luck with the dist-upgrade. This is an Ubuntu thing and is not specific to Ubuntu CE.

Thanks for your kind words. I am planning to release in the next few weeks. It all depends on how things go once I start the build.

The desklet is a gdesklet and allows you to easily change/modify its look for any desktop. It uses an RSS feed so you would need to be on the internet. I would love to have it pull from the gnomesword files, but just don't know how to accomplish it.

I am planning to release in a few weeks.

Thanks to everyone's kind words and I hope you will all enjoy it.

Yeah, I wish I knew how to pull it from gnomesword files too, there must be a way. It doesn't matter to me as much since I use broad band, but I know there are some dial-up users out there that would love to have that. Plus you could choose from any version that is located in gnomesword. I think I saw it once, on a KDE desktop, but can't remember for sure. I will have to dig around and see if I can find it, and look at the scripts it uses to see if anything stands out to me. If I find anything I will let you know. Thanks again for the great work.

In case it helps anyone... I did the upgrade by downloading the Alternate CD and inserting it while logged into the desktop. It autoruns and prompts you asking if you want to upgrade. My upgrade completed without error. I received a few questions regarding keeping configuration files. Even though I told it to use my existing Dansguardian file I still had to go back and make changes after the upgrade. I also had to uninstall Automatix2 and then download and install the version for Feisty. Other than that I've had no issues. All of my CE setting and artwork remained intact.

I just recently upgraded an AMD64 install to Feisty that I hope to set up like CE. The upgrade went very well and I will say that Feisty is awesome. I thought Edgy looked good, but the new look in Feisty is even cleaner. The ease of installing some things, such as nVidia binary drivers (yes, I know that is against Linux) and network drivers, is very impressive.

I haven't tried this to my CE install, because I don't want to mess it up, and last time I tried there was too much load on the upgrade servers.

Yes, it was a very well put together upgrade IMHO. And yes, Fiesty looks great! I just did a clean install as my hdd had to be replaced. I could have backuped and restored, but decided rather to just do a clean install. When the CE convert me script comes out, I'll be one of the first to give that a try  just waiting for the release. I want to see the nice look of CE on my desktop.

patience, it will be out soon enough, if you don't have patience, then just upgrade to Fiesty like some of us did (BACKUP FIRST) then you can enjoy Fiesty while waiting for the new look of CE to be released. I did an upgrade and it went rather well from Edgy CE to Fiesty. I may have had to disable Dan's guardian though or something like that. Don't remember now.

Ok, it is almost done!! I have to put the convert_me script together and do a little more testing before the release.

I have attached a screenshot of the Desktop and the new look of Firefox.

There were a few programs removed (Scribus, Nvu, and Gaim). This was needed to include the additional Christian resources. Gaim was added to the Ubuntu CE Installer since it is part of the basic Ubuntu install. Scribus and Nvu can of course be installed via Synaptic.

New features:
Bible RSS desklet (gdesklets)
The Word (http://www.theword.gr/en/) Installer
new "start" button
translucent desktop panels
Bible Fox (http://bodizzlethemes.blogspot.com) Firefox theme
Bible Toolbar (http://bibletoolbar.net/) Firefox extension
Better theme implementation and integration

I hope to release in the next week!!

Correction on that. NVU has been removed from the Fiesty repos. It has been replaced. You can see this thread. (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=420777) I just found out and wasn't too happy about it. However the Kompozer that is out looked pretty good. I just like things that are in the repos though. I would love to hear what you all think.

These are all proposed changes and may change before the actual release. :)

I like what I See so far.

Gorgeous. I love it. Thank you for the richer colors-much better. I love how the Bible verse is displayed-just awesome. The hardest part is waiting-thank you for all your hard work and for giving us a great way to keep a positive note in our minds as we work throughout the day. I love my CE and have told lots of people about it. My brother uses it now, too. He likes it very much.

I didn't know there was a Bible Thunderbird theme. Time to go install it. :p

[edit] Oh... There is not a Thunderbird 2 version of the theme yet. Guess i'll have to wait.

I will have an update for Thunderbird 2.0 soon. I just got one of my other themes updated to work with TB 2.0 so it shouldn't take much time to get my Bible theme updated as well. Keep checking my site for updates. It should be up by the end of the week.

Thanks. I just got it earlier this morning. It looks nice. I like the slight Mac look to it.

Ok, it is almost done!! I have to put the convert_me script together and do a little more testing before the release.

I have attached a screenshot of the Desktop and the new look of Firefox.

There were a few programs removed (Scribus, Nvu, and Gaim). This was needed to include the additional Christian resources. Gaim was added to the Ubuntu CE Installer since it is part of the basic Ubuntu install. Scribus and Nvu can of course be installed via Synaptic.

New features:
Bible RSS desklet (gdesklets)
The Word (http://www.theword.gr/en/) Installer
new "start" button
translucent desktop panels
Bible Fox (http://bodizzlethemes.blogspot.com) Firefox theme
Bible Toolbar (http://bibletoolbar.net/) Firefox extension
Better theme implementation and integration

I hope to release in the next week!!

God Bless, Jereme

I like the go back and go forward fish buttons. Excellent work!

I installed 7.04 and ran the old convert_me script for 6.06, nothing broken so far.:)

Brett,

I decided to go back to Thunderbird (so I could check out your themes ;)) and I love the theme!!! It looks great! However I installed the Lightning extension (the calendar side of mozilla) and it doesn't display right. :( I had to switch back to the regular view. It isn't a major problem, just doesn't display the squares for the month view, or the boxes for the day view. Just wanted to let you knowl

I'm not sure as I didn't use your theme before. Didn't know about them. Maybe someone else could verify this?

Hi Brett,

Nope. I hadnīt upgraded to Tbird 2 yet, so I thought I would try the Lightning extension with the CE theme on 1.5. I have sent you an email with screenshots, in hopes they might help. :)

God Bless,
Randy

If it would be helpful and you want me to post the screenshots here, maybe someone can assist with this? Just let me know.

Screen shot, that is a brilliant idea. I guess I should have thought of that. Here is a screen shot of my calendar. As far as adding it to the forum, you just need to click on the little paper clip in the icon bar above where you type the message. Then just browse for the screen shot that you saved on your desktop and click upload. If your screen shot is too large of a file size then it won't let you. That has happened to me a few times and took me a bit to figure out what is going on.

:) Hi Shane,

Thanks for the tip, but I already knew how. That is what is so wonderful about the Ubuntu community, is that everyone is so helpful.

After reading my post I can see where the misinterpretation took place. :) As far as the "maybe someone can assist with this?Ļ part, I was referring to helping Brett with the border problem for the calendar boxes. I havenīt done anything with working with themes or extensions (if you have questions regarding office, accounting, some graphical editing and network applications; I might be able to help you out), so I thought if it would be beneficial for Brett to have input from other posters I could submit the screenshots. I have emailed them to him already.

God Bless, and again thanks for the help,
Randy

I am curious, if you are going to update any of the code for problems with X.Org that many have had going from Edgy to Fiesty... I have a X1600 ATI card, and it works perfect in Edgy, and fails all day long in Feisty....

My themes should be working fine now with the Lightning extension. You can download the most recent update for Bible Thunderbird UCE at my website. It was a problem with the install and content files and not a .css issue.

Having a problem installing CE Feisty. I tried resizing the install page so I could access the buttons at the bottom, but the usual three methods failed, and I can't finish the install. When selecting time zone, hitting enter after selecting the zone only opens up the selection menu again-it doesn't enter the information. But the bottom of the page where the buttons usually are is hanging off the bottom of my screen. Any tips for resizing? When I move the cursor to the edge of the page, the resize line appears, but the edge of the page doesn't move. I tried using resize from the menu, ditto, and of course hitting the resize logo in the upper right corner didn't work.
