depends on what your preference is, and this isn't the place to get that kind of info.
This is for questions about the forums only.

ill be honest, i have used kopete very little.
if you use kde, you might want to stick with kde apps, therefore use kopete.
however, lindows seems to think gaim is superior, and it packages that.
i use gaim exclusively. it keeps advancing in leaps and bounds for features and ease of use. occasionally it has protocol hiccups, as in msn disconnects it, however they keep updating the protocol in newer versions.

Same here I used the other a little back when I was distro hopping but I just prefer Gaim.

I use gaim, but really don't have a clue about what all it can do. I DO, however, know what it CAN'T do, and that's Video messaging! I have a webcam and would like to talk to my brother in China, and it's easy to do with MSN on a winbox. Anybody got any suggestions? Maybe something in 1 of these 3 IM's I haven't discovered yet?
much obliged...

run amsn, without crashing!!
Back to the thread... I just use gaim. It come by default, and it's been a very friendly app to use. Although I would like "cyber-cafe" like accesibility (that's it, Let a user connect to his/her account without creating one in gaim.)

Gaim works nicely, but I strongly prefer Gossip (sadly that one currently only supports Jabber)

gaim, for some reason with kopete if your message sending has < in it, it won't show anything after the < it won't even showt he <.. i guess maybe it's taking it as a command? or something, not sure but the infamous <3 heart.. wasin't showing to somebody on windows and aim when i was using kopete

Just Gaim, it came with Ubuntu and it's good enough.
As for AMSN, I had it running on Windows and Mandrake 9.0 when I had a dual boot system. I had nightmares with it and of course it wasn't stable and solid enough. The reason for that?: tcl/tk
Nevertheless, the plugins system maybe will give AMSN a new life, but I haven't seen any useful plugin until now! Also, the new version will support many protocols, but I have to see it to believe it.
Skype is a very good program and the technology behind it. I would prefer it and actually I'm going to install it because it supports audio conversations.

I havn't tried amsn, but GAIM is imo, much better than kopete, which seemed to be layed out very poorly. AIM still has the easiest-to-read layout, and it's faster to tell who's away etc from the way the icons are set up. GAIM is almost as good in this area, and doesn't include the usual AOL ******** and ads. Its timestamp method isn't as good though, as they don't toggle on/off, they start being marked/unmarked, so you can't just have them off and suddenly turn them on to see one time.
So, GAIM>AIM>Kopete imo.

I don't use MSN any more than i have to because of their invasion of privacy policy but when i do use it i use Mercury, it offers way more features than either amsn(i think) and gaim and is way closer to having functional cam stuff and also doesn't crash easily. To be totally honest the cam stuff is functional already in mercury but to varying degrees... def worth checking out though.

Gaim for yahoo and icq.
Skype(rarely, seems way too bloated)

I think that Gaim is the best by far. On MS Windows I use Miranda IM a lot because I need support for MSN, ICQ and Yahoo.. occasionally even Jabber. Switching to Gaim from Miranda was very easy and Gaim supports the basic features of all major messengers very well.
All other messengers I tried either sucked or did not match Gaim at all. I could even install Gaim on Ubuntu via an AutoPackage.
I run Skype as well... gotta use the same IM's that my friends are using! ;-)

AIM still has 4 significant advantages over GAIM:
1: seperate away icons so it's easier to eyeball who's away
2: Togglable timestamps. Keep them off for a clean window, then turn them on to check a time quickly. In GAIM if you try to do that, it will just make all new ones have timestamps.
3: AIM windows stay where you put them, while GAIM windows reset to the same size and position every time. Mucho annoying
4: Flashing windows when you get a new message. Very uesful, especially when you find sounds to be annoying as hell on aim.

I like GAIM. I wish it would support AIM's "Direct Connect" feature. It's pretty handy for transferring images and files quickly

1: My gaim DOES have icons for people who are away. If you don't want the icons for people who are NOT away (which may be what you mean), it's as easy as deleting an image file.
2: you got me there, but I've always hated not having timestamps.
3: Again, you got me there. and this WOULD be nice, but it's by no means a showstopper in my opinion.
4: this is a gnome issue and not a gaim issue. There's a patch for this that it seems will be in windows.
5: Yeah, and I don't even get why they have the direct connect option included when it obviously doesn't work. Hopefully SOMEDAY gaim will fully support file transfer and direct connect.
There's no way it's going to be perfect because the specifications aren't as open as they need to be. I don't see AOL handing the gaim developers the specifications any day now either.

well, first of, we will need more then "etc..." ;-)
Anyway, I agree, Mercury is great, but as I'm no big fan of Java and it does tend to slow my computer down somewhat I dont use it.
I still prefer gaim over any other IM program for Linux

I'm a Windows XP user and I use GAIM because I like the tabbed IMing (much like tabbed browsing on Firefox) and I like to be able to talk to my Yahoo and Aol buddies without having 2 IM cleints open.
But the only thing I have about GAIM is that there is not direct connect or file transfer.

File transfer has improved loads. It works fine for recieving on aim and both ways on MSN. Your mileage may vary. Haven't tried the others.

Tabs are great, it is not unusual for me to have 5 open chats, as seperate windows that will drive you nuts, but with tabs it is real easy to handle it.
I miss custom emoticons in Gaim (MSN), it is a nice innocent little feature. O:)
The user interface could be enhanced though here and there.

Yeah, before I had to have like 4 seperate windows open at once and it kept me from having like 4 different windows at once.
I don't really miss the smilies. If I want to make a face I just use my imagination : ) : ( : P etc.
