View Full Version : Make Gnome look like OSX

Laterix
April 17th, 2007, 05:23 PM
Hi you all,

I wrote another article about modifying your Gnome to look like OSX Tiger operating system.

http://users.utu.fi/ljtaim/pics/osx-logo.png

You can read the article (http://www.taimila.com/osx-guide-2.php) at my website. In this thread you can give feedback and comments about it. I hope you like it!

If you hate people who change their Linux to look some other OS, please read the disclaimer below. ;)

Ok, there are almost always misunderstandings when people modify their OS to look some other OS. This is NOT about "I want a mac" or "I want OSX". If I would want a mac, I would go and buy one of those. No, this is simply about having fun by imitating and finding the limits of Gnome desktop. I ofter read that Gnome is considered very plain and not very configurable. I can't agree with that. Gnome is usable and simple, but yet very powerfull and it is possible to modify Gnome into anything you want. Now, I challenge KDE and OSX users to do the same. Can you make your KDE to look OSX as well as Gnome can imitate it? Or can you change your OSX to look Gnome, KDE or Windows? I doubt it, but I love to be proved wrong! ;)

Just to be clear, I don't want that OSX-look would be the default look of the Gnome. Gnome is beautiful with Tango icons and it should continue to follow it's own clean and usable style. I'm glad I made that clear. :)

Nice article, I plan to follow it later, after I follow your Orange-Look for Ubuntu article, since I find the Orange-look for Ubuntu more original ;) But I will try them both.

nice!! actually i read your first article and followed that one. now, i have a nice osx :) but one thing is really weird that when i installed the themes, i got the nice osx like system buttons on the title bar, but i couldn't change my ubuntu scrollbar to osx like scrollbar. even i tried the themes downloaded from your article. actually, all the other controls are still ubuntu controls, not those controls from the theme even though they are supposed to be replaced by the theme. could you tell me how to get the controls look like mac osx? thanx a lot.

A the moment there is no metacity theme (at least made by me), but I'm planning to do one, because when I install Feisty I will use Compiz and not Beryl anymore. So, you might get lucky! :)

About that macmenu... I don't know how to create deb-packages (except checkinstall which is not good for publishing)...

Hey Laterix, - So what exactly did you do to the macmenu applet to make the Lucida Grande fonts to work.? Because otherwise - its not aligned very nicely and you mention it in the article but I was wondering if you could post the patch? Thanks! Also, in your desktop, when there are tabs, the highlighted tab is also of the same height but on mine, the highlighted tab is slightly taller. Where would I fix that ?

But i cant create the OSX bar at the top, someone needs to write a better howto, gentoo has done it, but it needs to be modified

Looks interesting, I'd like to help with this :)

You could try to make a script which installs all of this .. ? :)
Or a complete icon set..
and of course a patch for the font + menubar !

Cheers

Then people wouldn't learn to modify. ;) No... I'm just too lazy to do that.

Or a complete icon set..

I have this, but I can't publish it, because of licence issues.

and of course a patch for the font + menubar !

I have this, but I can't find the licence information of the original Mac-menu applet. I would like to know that it is released under GPL, before releasing any code myself.

What about just the system tray icons? Do you have the same difficulties?

I'm very glad that I read this. I had been sorta migrating from a basic Ubuntu setup to a more Mac OSX setup anyway, since I've been using Compiz/Beryl's Scale plugin instead of a window list. I'm also glad that I installed those Mac fonts: Lucida Grande will probably remain my main system font, even after the allure of a pseudo-OSX look goes away. It's far nicer looking than the basic Ubuntu one.

Ok, AqD's mac menu seems to be LGPL according to gnome-files.org, so I can put my modified version to the guide.

Laterix, could you please post the colors/configs that you used on the Avant Window Navigator?

Sorry, I don't have those anymore. I installed Feisty yesterday and I didn't take a backup of color settings. Acutally, my desktop is not OSX looking at all now.

I'm a little bit lost with all these copyright issues. For example this page (http://www.jonmega.com/iceman/stuff/systray/) is sharing those system tray icons for Windows. I downloaded icons from there and converted them to png with gThumb.

I have not created any icons neither have I released any. If you refer to those system-tray-icons that I linked above, then you're right. There is white background color, which is not optimal choice. I can't change that. Sorry.

That looks great! I wish you had gone into more detail as to the exact steps that you took to get things working though.

Do you intend to do the same thing for feisty? If so, do you plan on making it a step by step guide as opposed to a rough guide. I think there are many people that would love to have this theme but get lost in the complexity of it all.

Thanks again for the guide as it is.

Yes. A very good idea. There are no clear instructions on making the mac menu applet at the moment. One page, explicit detail, with all files needed in the one place. With allowances for 64bit users as well. Don't think thats too much to ask. Or at the other end of the scale, someone show me how to do it and i'll write it up properly.

Yeah, same here - only happens with Lucida Grande, obviously.

Yeah, same here - only happens with Lucida Grande, obviously.
I had this "application name is high" bug with Lucida Grande when I had BOLD Lucida grande font installed. So look at your fonts directory and see is there only Lucida Grande or is there also a BOLD version of it. Remove the bold version (backup it) and restart X and see what happens.

This is because the font is buggy. So, I really can't fix it any other way.

You can find fonts at /usr/share/fonts and ~/.fonts

Icon is located at /usr/share/deskbar-applet/art. You can simply overwrite those png files with your own.

2) What's the way I should install your usplash and gdm theme?

You should be able to install GDM-theme with gnome Login manager. Usplash theme has instructions in the package. I copy them here:

1. sudo apt-get usplash-dev
- Installs usplash-dev package

2. make
- Compiles splashtheme

3. sudo make install
- Installs compiled theme

4. sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r)
- Regenerates initramfs

How can I remove that little black triangle?

Also, how can I remove that orange screen which shows right after i'm logging in gdm, it also says what's loading now - you know, those little icons with nautilus, beryl etc.
I'm using ubuntu 7.04

One more thing - how did you get the 'file system' icon on your desktop, as the screenshot shows?

Thanks for posting the icons earlier. It's not everything, but it's certainly a considerable step in the right direction. I've got NM and the Volume Applet using those pictures, now.

I do have one or two issues with your GTK Theme. In Network manager, when viewing the list of wireless networks, I get this odd blue spot where the quality bar should be. I also, in many applications, have buttons that seem to only show up as Labels. A pretty good example of what I'm talking about is file roller. I'll try to get a few screenshots to show you what I mean.

Thanks again for posting the article, it's been very fun to play around with these things.

I changed the deskbar by changing the icon in the /usr/share/deskbar-applet/ folder. I don't know if there's another way to change it.

To install GDMs, go to System > Administration > Login Window. You can drag the .tar.gz there.

For usplashes, it involves using the "update-alternatives" command. I would tell you how, but I'm in school right now....

Seems like you're not the only one. I don't know what to say. It worked for me. You can search this forum and find many posts about changing the splash screen. Maybe there's something useful for you...

How can I remove that little black triangle?

You can't without modifying the source code. I used USP-menu that doesn't have this triangle. USP = Ubuntu System Panel

I'm using ubuntu 7.04

Look -> System -> Administration -> Login Window -> local. There you can change the orange to black or what ever. You can disable gnome-splash screen with gconf-editor in Feisty.

I just created a new launcher that executes "nautilus /"

Attached is practically the perfect example of the button problem. In fact, it shows another (relatively minor) problem as well. I also often have it happen with fileroller, when I open some sort of archive from my 32 bit firefox.

Please disregard the glitchy panel. I'm working on it. I seem to have the applet working properly, but my GTK doesn't seem to have patched properly. I've got another deb file a brewing in the background here.

If I manage to get both working properly, I'll post my AMD64 Feisty debs here for both the modified macmenu and the patched GTK. Wish me luck.

I've made a ton of modifications to the macmenu, but I cannot manage to get the Title to line up with the menu. You can see it in the attached screenshot: "Text Editor" does not line up with the gedit menu. You don't seem to have this problem in the article. Is this on my end or is it a bug in macmenu?

Certain programs (like gnome-terminal) have dynamic title names that take up a lot of room. It would be impossible to do a simple title substitution, because it's always changing. I wrote some code (which you can actually see in the screenshot. Whoops) that will do the substitution based on the executable name. I modified the code to have two substitution lists: tsba (title substitution by application) and the traditional tsbt (title substitution by title). Any entry in the tsbt list will override anything in tsba list. It works pretty well and I've tested it a bit. I think I'll post it once I get this alignment problem fixed. I'll also post my modified gtk debs for amd64 at that same time.

A novel idea: Actually posting the screenshot this time!

Oops, I guess I overlooked that post. I'm happy with everything now, so I'll go ahead and post my modified macmenu sources and the amd64 deb.

I mostly made this for personal use. I did comment all of the code I wrote, but there's several implications.

Notes:

1) Because I'm mostly making this for myself, I went ahead and forced Lucinda Grande Bold 10 for the font of the title. I'll provide the source so you can take this out if you want.

2) If you're a customization person and have already modified the .macmenu-tslist, you'll have to move it to .macmenu-tsbtlist. If you haven't made any changes, don't worry about it. The applet will populate it for you, using the same default list as came with the original applet.

3) I have added .macmenu-tsbalist. It performs title substitution like the other list, but it does it based on the name of the executable. In this way, programs with dynamic window titles, like gnome-terminal, can be better controlled. The list takes the same format as .macmenu-tsbtlist, except that you use the application instead of the original title. The behavior is to check the Window Title for a direct substitution before checking the executable. I can't guarantee that it will work for 100% of all applications, but it at least let me rename my gnome-terminals. The default file only contains "gnome-terminal=Terminal".

If you want to make a deb for your own architecture, you should be able to use prevu or dpkg-buildpackage to create a deb from the sources.

EDIT: Fixed a bug already. Uploaded new packages with new version number.

EDIT: Added my patched GTK amd64 packages and source. If you try to bump this source to a new version, be sure to edit debian/docs.in and debian/gtk2.0-examples.examples.in for that new version. I couldn't get it to build without hardcoding it.

Angafirith
April 26th, 2007, 09:48 PM
Well, for one, my deb actually works. There was a bug in the one I had originally been using that meant that it would give me an error any time I added a macmenu applet or logged into my account. I fixed that.

Aside from forcing the font, there's only one major change: the title substitution by application that I discussed above.

This sound odd that desktop icons disappeared. It sounds like your nautilus crashed. Did you try to restart X or kill nautilus? The Orange-look script was written for Dapper and it is NOT recommended to run it on any other system.

Yeah, I've restarted a couple of times...I've even rebooted twice and it still is messed up. KDE and XFCE are fine though. What really is a bummer is that none of the modifications took effect.

UPDATE: Now, this is really really odd. After rebooting for the third time I have my desktop icons back and everything seems to be back to normal. But the effects of the script (changing icons, etc) still didnt' seem to take.

a small tip for the user distributor logo:

I downloaded an apple icon from Gnome Look (http://www.gnome-look.org/) renamed it to distributor-logo.png and copied to the folder /scalable/places in the OSX icon theme folder. That's all, if it doesn't appear at once you have to restart the panel by typing this in the console:
killall gnome-panel
I suggest you restart X by hitting Ctrl+Alt+BackSpc (save everything before doing this!!) or selec another icon theme in the theme preferences manager and then reselect the OSX icon theme.
I hope i told the truth. Once again thanx laterix for the OSX guide. It's really great, keep it up.

Hi there!
I did everything just like your guide tells me. It's perfect, with exception of 2 little things:

- the tray icons(beryl-manager and gaim to be exact) are "colorful"
- the mac-menu applet, that doesn't align the title.

the title bar:
http://www.jpegr.com/uploads/1/issue03.jpg (http://www.jpegr.com)

when Lucida Grande Bold is removed:
http://www.jpegr.com/uploads/1/issue04.jpg (http://www.jpegr.com)

I searched all over the forum(like 2 days and all) for a fix about this last issue, but:

1- the (@#*@!%) applets i found don't compile AT ALL!!! and if they someday compile, I heard it may not work in most cases.
2- if I "delete" the Lucida Grande Bold font, the title finally aligns, BUT the space(width) for it becomes crazy... GNOME becomes "GN..." File Manager becomes "File Man..." etc.

somebody help me!
(I installed both macmenu/patchedGTK from some .deb package at once, so I can't "modify the source" or something like that)

How can i change the network icon,i have tried to look in here

a small tip for the user distributor logo:

But i have put my icons in every folder in there and it still not working.

the volume icon i have changed worked well, but the network....does it have a special name, because i thought this was it: network-idle.png, network-offline.png... etc?

It deponds on ur icon theme.
eg: OsX_MoD/scalable/apps/48 for OS X Mod 2

For network manager applet, : OsX_MoD/scalable/stocks/network-idle.png or nm-device-wireless.png

I do have a suggestion for the gaim system tray icon: get rid of it. There's a plugin for gaim that uses DBUS to communicate with Avant Window Navigator to do the same thing. In the first screenshot here, you can see it in action (I'm using Adium icons, so look at the green duck). My AIM status is set to away in this screenshot, so it's using the away icon instead of the usual one (the eyes are half closed). Colorful icons are not out of place on the dock, so it works pretty well.

As for Beryl, I don't know what to say. I had actually looked for an icon to replace, without any luck. Beryl runs really poorly on here, so I'm using Compiz 5.0.0 with Emerald.

I like how Screenlets and the Widget applet in Compiz/Beryl work together (second screenshot). I've never actually used OSX, but it reminds me of what I've seen in Dashboard.

I've installed an OSX icon theme from gnome-look and setup my own icon theme that inherits from it. Here's the thing that bothers me: the firefox windows still have that old icon. Does anyone know how I can fix that?

killbill
May 8th, 2007, 11:23 AM
1.The plugin Not working for pidgin.
2.There are still lots of apps using old ugly icons when it´s active, u need to replace them.

Try to replace icons in /usr/lib/firefox .

And, others, not figured out yet: gimp, mplayer.

BTW: I´m using compiz with emerald, too.

And I´ve noticed u have no alignment problem for window frames, so which emerald theme are u using?

Angafirith
May 8th, 2007, 11:37 AM
I'm using the Emerald Theme that's in the article. I think it's called "Dream".

I'm pretty sure you can modify the gaim plugin to work with pidgin. I'd look into it myself, but I don't actually have pidgin installed on here. I haven't found a satisfactory debian package for it yet.

killbill
May 8th, 2007, 08:09 PM
I c. I use the DreamAccurateTiger theme downloaded from themes.beryl-project.org, but have window frame alignment problems.

I compiled pidgin myself. For pidgin, u can set the diffenrent tray icons from the status icon, so pretty like adium.

Angafirith
May 9th, 2007, 03:49 AM
Go ahead and put away that ugly systray icon; I got the awn plugin to work with pidgen. Here's what you do:

Edit gaim_awn.c and change the include of "gtkgaim.h" to "pidgen.h".

Add the following two includes:
#include "gaim-compat.h"
#include "gtkgaim-compat.h"

These add definitions that allow you to compile gaim plugins for pidgen without rewriting everything.

Now, every time you see a call to "dbus_g_proxy_call(" and see "gaim" in quotes, change that to pidgen.

For example, say you have this:

dbus_g_proxy_call(proxy, "SetTaskIconByName", &error, G_TYPE_STRING,
"gaim", G_TYPE_STRING, filename, G_TYPE_INVALID);

Change it to this:

dbus_g_proxy_call(proxy, "SetTaskIconByName", &error, G_TYPE_STRING,
"pidgin", G_TYPE_STRING, filename, G_TYPE_INVALID);
There's a couple of instances like this.

Now, edit the makefile. On the pkg-config line, change "gaim" to "pidgen":

$(CC) -fPIC -c $(SRCS) -o gaim_awn.o -DVERSION=\"`date "+%Y%m-%d_%R"`\" `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 gaim atk cairo pango glib-2.0 dbus-1`

becomes
$(CC) -fPIC -c $(SRCS) -o gaim_awn.o -DVERSION=\"`date "+%Y%m-%d_%R"`\" `pkg-config --cflags gtk+-2.0 pidgin atk cairo pango glib-2.0 dbus-1`

Now, modify the install line:

cp gaim_awn.so ~/.gaim/plugins/
becomes
cp gaim_awn.so ~/.purple/plugins/

Should be good to go now. I'd post my own sources, except that I went ahead and modified them and added another feature. Getting to be a bit of a habit.

Hello Guys,

I know it may sound like a pretty basic question but, How do I create a tar file with all the icons I like?

The thing is suppose I look around and find several icons I like. The how do I create an icon set so I can easily transfer them to my other PCs? I is a tedious process to change them one by one every time....

Thanks!

The easiest way is to take some theme that has many icons like Tango theme. Then you overwrite those icons with your own. There is also an index file that you need to edit. Just change your theme name etc. And don't forget to rename the directory from Tango to YourThemeName. You can tar the directory with nautilus just select directory click right mouse button and select "Create archive..."

I don't know about mirror, but my site is back on. I have a little problems with bandwidth limit, but I'll fix this in next months. In this month download has already exceeded 52Gb which mainly consists of HTML and JPG files. That's a lot more than I expected. I have 25Gb/month limit, but my web-host is very understanding and willing to reset my limit now and then. So, if it's offline just wait a day and come back.

Sorry, but I don't know. I have neither done those deb packages nor have I written the guide. But I assume that you just need to reinstall GTK packages with synaptic.

darundal
May 26th, 2007, 01:50 PM
Yeah, but synaptic won't let me reinstall them. It will only let me remove them, and then reinstall them (after which I have to reinstall almost every program on my machine). Aptitude won't let me purge them, because it says there are too many dependencies, and offers me no other options. Synaptic thinks that those packages are the same as the ones on the official repos, so update attempts don't work at all.

Hi, I've tryed anything at all to produce this menu bar and I couldn't. Can you give some topics from which I can see how the things are going on. Thanks. My mail is:
anderson@mail.bg

This depends on GTK-theme. If you use my GTK-OSX-look-a-like theme then it's all the same. Some other themes may work as well, but I don't know which one.

This depends on which menu applet you use. In my screenshots I used USP (Ubuntu System Panel) menu applet, which don't have that arrow. You can't remove that arrow from default gnome-menu unless you want to modify the source code.

and why some people get "linux desktop" and i get "gnome" .... my snapshot speaks for me .....
Mac-menu applet allows you to set there what ever text you like. There is a configfile in your home directory for this. I can't remember the filename, but see what hidden files you have in your home dir.

Found out since the icon theme inherits from tango it just have to stop declaring the vendor icons.

Was trying to get the look and see if Macs are really something, but there is only one Avant package for feisty and it is VERY broken, it replaces 1/4 of the desktop with black background and lies in the bottom of that black rectangle, did anyone succeed in getting it to work correctly on feisty?

I kind of liked the icons, but they are too fuzzy for me thus I switched back to tango, the widget style was harder to get rid off since when I switched to human you begin to miss the awesome looking menubar, but if you switch back to OSX you begin to wonder why toolbar icons need to look so flashy. I think the panel image got a permanent spot in my desktop from now.

I believe that I already answered to your email, but let's say it again on the forum. You can't limit the mac-menu only for one user. If you install it, it WILL effect all users. As far as I know, the only way to uninstall it, is to reinstall GTK lib packages with synaptic.

Background: I tried going through your guide, and being the novice that I am, I could only get about half-way through. I decided to just put the main panel at the bottom and be happy with what I had, but a problem had arisen after messing with the guide's part related to the Mac applet...Here's what has happened:

For some reason, on some applications, the menu bar that contains things such as "File, Edit, View, Tools," etc, seems to be apart from the application window itself. The toolbar appears in the top left corner of my screen and the actual window doesn't have the bar attached to it. This happens for: Terminal, Gaim, and the Explorer.
A couple of screenshots are attached to show this...

I have included a screenshot of the packages I installed before this problem was born. These packages, as the site told, were intended for some reason to make the main panel act like "Mac OS X." You can probably notice how I have a Mac style theme...

Anyways, maybe there is some download that has the official packages?

Does anyone know how to make a .deb file? I kinda need one because I can't find some things like the i.e. macmenu-applet or can't install them. :KS:popcorn::):(:guitar::mad:

Hi!

Your problem is not so difficult. The Mac Menu Bar only works as intended if you put the mac menu bar applett on one of your GNOME panels. You just have one panel on the bottom of your screen und none one the top. You just didn't add the applett to your panel- In my oppinion having the menubar on the bottom pannel just plain sucks ;) Put a Panel on the top of the screen and add the Mac Menu Applett and it should work fine.

Apart from that I got just one remark: The lower panel just looks kind of messy because there are too many starters and tings you've put onto the panel and there is not much space left for the window list...

I followed all the instructions you suggest in your article but I did not obtain the black icons on the top right of the bar. Please can you help me?
This is what I obtained....

that depends about the icon theme and how complete and accurate it is, try a search at http://gnome-look.org/content/search.php

the theme is in my home (hidden) folders and it's named .icons/OSX/scalable/stocks i have put the .png files, but they wouldnt take any effect :( .

cant test it again, i'm at work, but when i'm home ill try it

sudo gtk-update-icon-cache –force .icons/OSX/scable/sctocks

I had to use this when updating /usr/share/icons/Human before my replacement for the ubuntu logo would display.

Disclaimer: I didn't read all the way through this thread, so this might have been covered already. If so, I'm sorry to bring it up again. If not, it might help someone. Also, this assumes you are running Feisty. I don't know if this works on other versions.

Regarding OSX icons, if you are using these icons http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/OSX?content=31618
then you will discover that the Ubuntu logo is still the default icon for the Main Menu and other places. Apparently that icon set uses the Tango icon set for its base. That means that you can replace one scalable icon and achieve some good results.
Here is a link to a scalable Apple icon:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Apple_logo.svg
Just right click on the link and Save Link As... to your desktop (or wherever).
To change the color from black, open it in Inkscape and click on the graphic and click on whatever color you want. Save the file with the name "start-here.svg" to your desktop (or wherever you want).
Backup the original "start-here.svg" file in the /usr/share/icons/Tango/scalable/places/ folder
sudo cp /usr/share/icons/Tango/scalable/places/start-here.svg /usr/share/icons/Tango/scalable/places/start-here.bak.svg

Copy your new Apple icon into that folder (but change the "username" to whoever you are in the code below).
sudo cp /home/username/Desktop/start-here.svg /usr/share/icons/Tango/scalable/places/start-here.svg

Ctl/Alt/Bksp to restart Gnome and you should see your Ubuntu logo replaced by your Apple logo.

Final disclaimer: YMMV. Please don't yell at me if something goes wrong. I was just trying to be helpful.

I think I can see your point. I guess I'm not yet decided on what is "just for fun" and what is "too far". Since I change my desktop's "look and feel" about every five minutes, I'm imagining this logo replacement to be something people do on a whim for a short period of time before moving on to something else.
Personally, I'm extremely happy to be a Ubuntu user and "promote" it when the opportunity arises. But I also enjoy the flexibility it has when it comes around to playing with it and having it do all sorts of fun stuff, including having it look like a Mac.
But I will at least consider what you said.

the volume icons are located in ~/.icons/<theme>/scalable/stock or /usr/share/icons/<theme>/scalable/stock

default battery icons in usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps, usr/share/icons/hicolor/22x22apps and usr/share/icons/hicolor/24x24/apps (replace hicolor wid theme u are using if it bundles separate batt icons)

I do not know the process to install gnome-dock. I have gotten all dependencies, and download the project from subversion repositories. However, when exectuting make in either the trunk or branches/initial-code directories, I am getting a bunch of errors printing out. In the Readme it says:

You need to have working .desktop files on ~/.cairo-dock.

Does this mean: $~cp /usr/share/applications/*.desktop ~/.cairo-dock

~/.cairo-dock

What is ~/.cairo-dock?

Can anybody help with some instruction?

you can find some ressources on this site :

including some screenshots, videos, and the .deb to install the new cairo-dock. It's a new project taken from last year's gnome-dock.

see this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3249955#post3249955) for a little explanation about it.

Taken from the FSJ blog (http://fakesteve.blogspot.com/2007/09/news-flash-you-can-make-linux-desktop.html)...

It is possible to modify Gnome into anything you want. Now, I challenge KDE and OSX users to do the same... can you change your OSX to look Gnome, KDE or Windows?

Wow, the guy has a point. I've always wanted my OSX desktop to look like Windows. I've also wanted to be able to have a Mercedes that looks like a Ford Focus; hence the reason I still haven't bought that Mercedes.

It's really got a point... ;)

I couldn't get it to build without hardcoding it.

http://www.intentionallyleftblank.net/packages/gtk-patched-menubar.tar.bz2

Thanks Angafirith,

I tried these packages and was able to successfully configure Mac-Menu. I tried everything else before this. Nothing worked for me on my AMD 64 laptop.

i just stumbled upon this thread... very interesting.

One thing though: It is one thing to look like OSX, but I have seen very little about getting the HUI to ACT like OSX as in mapping all the common Apple command-click keystrokes and F-key options and Apple standard keyboard buttons (volume, eject disk, etc).

Most of the common Apple keystrokes involve the commany key, which is in the position of the 'alt' key on a standard keyboard, and the Apple default for 'alt' is 'shift+option' with the 'option' key being in the position of the 'windows' key on a standard keyboard. I have tried manually mapping the keys, but some of the keystroke combos interfere with common Linux commands. Is there a simple way to map all the Linux 'alt' commands to a 'shift+option(aka windows button)' tier while setting the standard Apple keystrokes to the 'alt (aka command)' button?

The point would be to take a Windoze PC that might be collecting dust in the closet, set up linux, slap an Apple extended keyboard on it and run linux in an OSX skin so that you can work back and forth between it and an Apple machine with out the keystroke headaches like trying to open a new tab and inadvertantly bringing up the terminal or some such nonsense?

I would love the OSX style on my Ubuntu. But I think I'll stick to changing borders and icons.

The only problem is that the OSX icons are huge, I'd prefer them almost half the size. How would I go about it? Is there a complete "port" of OSX icons pertinent to Ubuntu use? If someone could point me to a how-to get them into the theme manager, I could resize them and maybe make a theme!

Thanks

Hello,

Things look promising for me in several ways. My problem now is that when I select the desired theme (found a random OSX theme at Gnome-Look (http://gnome-look.org/); the package from the guide page (http://www.taimila.com) didn't work at all), the theme manager applies:

This theme will not look as intended because the required GTK+ theme engine '' is not installed.

When searching for gtk engines (sudo aptitude search gtk2-engines), it comes up with several choices. Does anyone know which one I should look for with my new OSX looking theme?

infra_red_dude
December 28th, 2008, 05:14 PM
Its an error generated by the engine coz of a particular line in the gtkrc file. The engine entry in the line is empty. The previous versions didn't bother to throw up this error but the newer version does. You don't hafta worry about anything. Just go ahead :)

I tried that too, but the OSX theme is not available there, maybe because of lacks in the theme package. All available frames are by the way right-aligned, can't find any function to change that. Any thoughts? If it works for you, maybe you could share what OSX themes you're using.
