Dont't you think it would be nice to have the same as a LiveCD, but which could be on a USB drive ?
Cause we could have on it more space, a rw /home, and, moreover, personnalizable set of software ...
Sure, putting the system on a USB device isn't the problem, the thing is to create a set of softwares that could detect all the configuration of the system, and to make it fit at maximum to what the user decided to create.
For example, the system should :
- Detect wireless best-known network to connect (automatic + user (indirect) decision)
- Automount partitions (automatic)
- Autodetect devices : webcams, bluetooth, etc. (automatic)
- More complex : Adapt configuration to what user want, IF IT IS POSSIBLE :
the user want eyecandy ?
-> ok well, what is the graphic card
--> what's the best driver for what user want ?
--> the driver don't exist, so disable for this session desktop effects, OR
--> the driver exists
----> it is available, just use it (and set up xorg.conf)
----> not available, just download and use it
The nice thing would be to let the user decide of his system policy, with detailed configuration or not (detailed : I want to use this specific driver with this specific kind of hardware, etc, general : I absolutely want eyecandy, or I absolutely want free software).
Nomad configuration is just a must-have ! Please consider this idea.
