I would like to be able to set a wallpaper to each desktop instead of just one for all. Other distros have this can we as well?

Available in current Beryl at least.

I've thought about this as well, it gets my vote.

There just has to be an option to choose all the same still, so that if someone wants them to be the same they don't have to set it three for four times.

Aren't you just seeking wallpapoz ? :
http://wallpapoz.akbarhome.com/

Even if this tool can be improved, it offers this functionality right now whereas you'll have to wait a little bit more to have this integrated in a better way by default.

Your post was too cute. "But mooomm, everyone else has a tattoo of their boyfriend's name on their lower back!"

I tried it, but IMHO, it's really slow in changing wallpapers. My images aren't so big (63k) so the change should be immediate. The image appears about 2 seconds after I change workplace
Unless the slowness is due to the position of the files in the HDs

Just to clarify, this would be for Gnome, right?

KDE already has this.

Yes I would like it for gnome. Also to the guy who mentioned beryl. Well it doesnt work with ati cards all that well and what about the cards that arent supported for xgl? :)

Just giving you options.

The plugin is not that old, maybe ATI cards will be supported after a while.

I agree. I think that when you set a wallpaper it should ask "do you want to set the wallpaper for just this workspace or for all workspaces?"

I sixteenth that vote

One thing that seems interesting is using different icons on the desktops and not just seperate wallpapers (just like with having two screens).

That's exactly how I expected it to work!

When I tried Linux for the very first time, I thought the feature was broken because the wallpaper and icons stayed the same when switching between workspaces. It took me quite a while to realise that it was meant to be like that.

I have never used the feature since, because in its current incarnation it just seems like glorified Alt+Tabbing to me (rather than proper separate workspaces where you can lay things out differently to suit different tasks).

I'd quite like to see different taskbars as well (showing only the apps open on that particular workspace).

The only thing I'd like to see on all desktops is the workspace switcher (obviously), and the top panel.

Even the toppanel should be possible to have on just 1 workspace.

Yes, I've no doubt that it's possible, but I do wonder how desirable it would be, given that you'd have to keep going back to the main desktop to access your menu and to see your notification area (unless of course it was possible to re-create these on a new panel in your new workspace).

I doubt that any of this will happen though, because when I checked the Gnome forums, there were certain people freaking out about just allowing different wallpaper (never mind anything functional).

One guy even said that by allowing a different wallpaper it would break the desktop metaphor because it would mean that you'd be working with 2 different desktop folders.

I wonder what that guy would do if someone set his wallpaper to a background image that was half red and half blue? ......... He'd probably have a nervous breakdown when he moved his eyes from the left red side of the screen to the right blue side (thinking that he had somehow suddenly ended up with 2 desktop directories in his Home folder).
